Hebrew Department Chair
Hannah Senesh Community Day School, an open and inclusive independent K-8 Jewish school in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, is hiring an experienced and dynamic Hebrew language Department Chair to lead our K-8 Hebrew program. Our Hebrew program is based on the Proficiency Approach, which focuses on developing a learner's ability to use Hebrew functionally in real-world situations, emphasizing communication and practical application across all skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing), through real-world application and integrated skills.
This position is part of the school’s educational leadership team and reports to the Middle School Director. Applicants should be creative, thoughtful, and reflective educators who value working in a progressive school setting. Start date flexible—as early as Spring 2025 and no later than July 2025. Department Chair Responsibilities and Teaching Duties
- Lead the development and implementation of Hebrew curriculum; including pacing guides and curriculum mapping
- Support professional growth and evaluation of Hebrew teachers through regular observation, goal-setting, weekly meetings, department meetings, and feedback related to teacher instruction and student learning
- Oversee student growth in learning through the review of student assessments and teacher reports
- Partner with the Student Support Team to determine how best to meet the needs of diverse learners
- Make recommendations regarding hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty
- Collaborate with Judaic Studies Department Chair to enhance the richness of Jewish identity and to elevate Israel education
- Incorporate Hebrew language into the daily life of the school through special programs, holidays, and school projects
- Stay up-to-date on best practices through participation in relevant professional organizations
- Order materials and supplies, represent the department at school events, and arrange for substitute coverage
Qualifications
- Native fluency in Hebrew
- Master’s degree in education or a Hebrew-related field
- Five or more years experience working in the field of Hebrew education
- Leadership and supervision experience
- Experience with the Proficiency Approach
- Eagerness to rethink and iterate on pedagogy and to develop new curriculum
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and parents
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
- Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor
