Welcome to 6th Grade! 8/30/18

HUMANITIES:
My name is Naomi Forman, and I’m so excited to teach your children in 6th grade grade humanities this year. In Social Studies and English Language Arts, students will learn to engage with texts in new ways; they’ll read critically for deeper meaning and draw connections to their own lives and the world around them. As we learn about ancient cultures in places like Egypt and Greece, they’ll examine how history continues to impact our lives today. They’ll also practice sophisticated reading skills as they track themes and literary devices in both fiction and nonfiction texts, and they’ll hone their writing skills as they produce narrative, informational, and persuasive writing pieces. I’m confident that the year will be both engaging and rigorous, and I’m looking forward to learning and teaching alongside the students.
Outside of work, I love reading, playing board games, and staying active. In fact, I just returned from a cross-country bike trip across the UK, and I’m feeling energized and ready for a new year!

The best way to contact me is through e-mail, at NForman@hannahsenesh.org. Have a wonderful weekend, and I can’t wait to see the new sixth graders next week.

Best,

Naomi

MATH:

Shalom! I’m delighted to join the Hannah Senesh team as the fifth and sixth grade math teacher. Being one of the “newbies,” I look forward to welcoming you and your children on my favorite day of the year, the first day of school. We’ll also meet on Back to School Night the following week, and then I’ll have the opportunity to share some of the fun and exciting units in math students are sure to enjoy. I’m committed to making math a fun experience and am full of enthusiasm and anticipation for the coming school year.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.

JUDAICS:

I am so happy to have a second year teaching your children! I can’t wait to see their growth over a two year period. I look forward to being able to pick up where we left off last year and continue to grow text skills, understanding and personal connection to our Jewish text, history and traditions. This year we will be diving into the book of Exodus/ Shemot as well as Rabbinic text surrounding the holidays. We will be beginning the year using our learning about the High Holidays to talk about acting with intention and thinking about what kind of community we want to create in 6th grade.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns,  Lmarder@hannahsenesh.org

HEBREW:
Bruchim HaBaym Le Ivrit- Welcome to a year of Hebrew!
My name is Andreea Adereth and this is my 10th year teaching Hebrew in the Middle School at Hannah Senesh. Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language is my passion! I look forward to guiding the children on an exciting journey in which they will discover the beauty of speaking a second language and will be able to communicate with Israelis and with Hebrew speakers from the entire world. In addition to teaching Hebrew, I strive to instill in my students a lifelong love for learning and a real connection to Israel, to its people, language, and culture.
I can always be reached at aadereth@hannahsenesh.org
Looking forward to meeting everyone soon!
Andreea

BAR/BAT MITZVAH CLASS

I am so excited to get to know your children even better this year in our Bar and Bat Mitzvah class.  During this once a week course, students will delve deep into our school values as they consider what it means to become a responsible, adult member of the Jewish community.  They will practice specific skills to prepare for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience, such as writing and delivering divrei torah [short sermons], engage in hands on projects such creating a Bar/Bat Mitzvah guide and a tefilin STEAM unit to explore the meaning behind the mitzvoth (commandments) that are traditionally assumed upon reaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah and think about what it means to be a contributing member of the community through an “Areivut (Communal Responsibility)” project.
