Welcome December

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
We hope you all had a meaningful and restful Thanksgiving weekend. It’s hard to believe, but we are already in December, which means that winter vacation is a mere three weeks away! Please let teachers know if your child will be missing school prior to or after vacation so we can make sure they receive all work and lessons.
We are very excited as we prepare for the Lower School Hebrew Play on Monday, December 18! Kids have been working hard and the fourth grade is especially excited since they take the starring roles in the Hebrew play. We hope to see you there!
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Chumash, students aimed to answer the age old question — was Yitzchak really fooled into thinking that Yaakov was Esav, or did he suspect something was going on? Did he give away the blessing unwittingly, or was he complicit in the deception? As the fourth grade learned the scene in question, students were careful to look out for quotes that give evidence to either side of the argument. It’s hard to believe it, but we are reaching the end of our first Parsha, which means that we will have a big project coming soon!
In Yahadut, we continued learning about the Age of Judges with the stories of Ehud ben Gera and Devorah the Prophet. We went into detail as we examined the role of Judge in Ancient Israel, and the roles of the Twelve Tribes in those days. We will be taking a leap forward in the timeline next week to learn the historical story of Chanukah, and return to the Age of Judges with the story of Samson after vacation. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
We have REALLY hit the ground running this first week after Thanksgiving. Fourth graders started new units in nearly all of their subjects! In math we have been learning about bar graphs, line graphs and tables. Our newest writing project is information writing. We will be writing these pieces on our current social studies unit, which is the American Revolution. We also started new book groups in reading! Each fourth grader is in one of two groups and both groups are reading Newbery Medal winners! One half is reading The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. The other half is reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon
