Welcome 2018!

Community Building

In Morning Meeting we began “share”, where a second grader gets chosen to bring in an item from home and share it with the group. We discussed using the 5 W question words “who, what, where, when, and why” to help guide our share and give us ideas about what information to share about the item. Second graders are practicing being respectful audience members and asking the sharer thoughtful questions. We are excited to learn more about each other and practice speaking and listening!

Social Studies

In preparation for the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. day, we began reading books about civil rights leaders. This week we read The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles, a story about a six year old African American girl who bravely enrolls in a school designated for only white children. We studied the cover of this book to gain information about what this book will be about, and to already begin thinking about the author’s message. We used a chart as we listened to take down notes or draw about what we were learning and what we want to learn about these brave leaders. Second graders asked thoughtful questions such as, “Why was there so much separation when they could all be friends?” or “Why didn’t more people say that this is unfair?”

Ask your child about Ruby Bridges’s life.

Math

In math we used different materials to create our own multiplication and division problems. We also were given different shapes to make out of a certain number of sticks, then had to write what the math problem was. For example, if we were given 20 sticks and had to make hexagons using all 20 sticks, the problem would be 20÷5=4. We also used Model Magic to make different shapes to represent problems, and enjoyed having some time to build and create different shapes.

Over the weekend, practice some division problems using household items, stickers, or cards!

Israel: The Galil with Yaheli

Yaheli took us around the northern Galil area of Israel where we learned about the Druze people and made labane.
