Week of Nov 6th

Hi 5th grade Parents,

We look forward to welcoming back Tony next week! This week we had student teacher conferences during advisory. The students were so reflective about their strengths and goals. We look forward to continuing our advisory mindfulness program next week along with our unit about Kindness and Empathy. Have a wonderful weekend!

Judaics:

This week in Judaics we began our unit on the religious Zionists called the Biluim. Students explored their personal family stories about where their families came from and why they left their homes. We compared the motivations of our family with the motivations of the Biluim. We found that the Biluim moved to the Land of Israel because of religious motivations, which was different from most of our family stories of moving. Students reflected on what home is and what a Jewish homeland means to them. They took these answers that were on papers and worked as a group to create the shape of a house using the lesson from our quote from the Mishnah “If I am not for myself who will be for me, and if I am only for myself what am I, and if not now when?” Students worked on their group work skills based off of this quote and then reflected on the process after the house was built. We discussed how hard the building of the Jewish Homeland must have been working with so many people with different opinions of what the home should look like.

Science:

Students this week conducted an experiment to discover the differences between weight and mass. They used digital force meters to measure the force of gravity on an assortment of objects. Working with the formula of weight, students are making connections in how gravity is important to the concept of weight. Next week we will continue our discoveries of different science forces.
