Week of Nov. 13

What a week! The Thanksgiving break is approaching fast, and our students are working as hard as ever! We are excited to share our updates with you, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday. This week in advisory we made place mats for our buddies for the Thanksgiving feast, did a mindfulness lesson and had a full class meeting to brainstorm how to make recess betteIMG_1118

HUMANITIES: Before I provide my Humanities update, I would just like to thank Casey, Cheryl, and our amazing 5th grade team for all of their love and support while I was out. It’s so good to be back with my wonderful students, who did a great job of persevering through my absence and not letting it slow down their learning! In Humanities this week, we came close to wrapping up our Research-Based Argument Essays on current events. Our students really dove into this challenge head-on, and displayed a lot of progress in their writing. We are also close to finishing Wonder, and in Social Studies, we explored the background and common misconceptions about Islam, as well as some tall tales from Ancient India. I hope everyone has a relaxing and food-filled Thanksgiving!-Tony

Judaics:

This week we learned about the Biluim a group of Zionists who moved to the Land of Israel in the hope of the messiah coming. We also got split up into groups and each got assigned a time in Israeli history .After we understood our time in history, we either showed everyone our posters we made or we did a skit demonstrating the time in history.  We learned about how the Ottoman empire were good to the jews until their government started failing. We started learning about how Joseph got his “striped coat of colors” and how his brothers were like any other brothers and “hate” each other.

This week we learned about the biluim (religious Zionists in 1700’s). We each were put into different groups and would solve different challenges together that they may have faced. Also each group was assigned a different important moment in Jewish history in the Land of Israel and we each made a little skit or presentation on the topic we got. We also learned about how the Ottoman empire ruled over the land of Israel. We also continued learning  more about Joseph and got back into translating with our chevrutas.

MATH: This week, the fifth graders multiplied multi-digit numbers by a 2-digit number and divided a 2-digit or 3-digit number by a 2-digit number where the quotient was 1-digit or 2-digits. Next week, we will be done with unit two materials after more division practices, and the unit two test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday (November 30th) – Friday (December 1st).-Kelly

This week in class we continued our topic on “Family”. After learning all the different titles on family relations the students participated in many listening comprehension activities. While listening to the conversations the class drew the subjects family tree using the new vocabulary they learned. In addition, students answered comprehension questions on the material.-Yehuda

SCIENCE: Students this week conducted an experiment to discover the concept of friction. They used digital force meters to measure the force of friction by pulling a block of wood across four different surfaces. They used the computer attached to the force meter to create graphs that showed the friction force as they pulled the block. Students are focusing on the needed skills to conduct experiments in order to produce accurate data. The excitement in science continues next week!-MikeIMG_3340 IMG_3341
