Dear parents

This has been a productive week for 8th grade!

Both groups have been hard at work writing short skits on interactions with a traveling agent planning a trip to Israel! The students have practiced the skits and are now filming them.

I wish everyone a sunny weekend,

Andreea

Heritage

Humanities

Literature and Writing: In Literature and Writing, we have gone back to our study of Night.  Because of emotional difficult subject matter, a majority of the writing students are doing are related to how what they are reading is making them feel.  We are also studying Wiesel’s use of irony and metaphor to convey the horrors of his journey from Sighet to Auschwitz.  Additionally, students are reading short, supplemental texts to discern additional information that informs the text.

History: Students watched a documentary on slave narratives in preparation for choosing books for their slavey historical fiction bookclubs.  Book clubs will begin two weeks from now as students will use History class next week to work on their graduation speeches and yearbook pages.

Have a great weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies

The 8th graders are studying the story of Shimshon/Samson. We began by thinking about what hair can represent — power, gender identity, personality, social standards, wildness, control, etc. Students translated psukim about Shimshon’s early life and discussed what it might feel like to be born into all sorts of expectations and restrictions: how might Shimshon react to having had his life’s work decided for him before he was even born?

Shabbat shalom,

Jessica

Math and Science

8th Grade has started their STEAM Bridge Project within their science and math classes. This first week we focused on introducing the basic concepts and terms of bridges. Through the use of hands on activities and online interactive lessons, they started building their understanding of bridges. Next in this project they will be conducting research on different bridges around the world, applying the knowledge gained in these introduction lessons. We are excited that this project is according both the math and science classes. We look forward to the development of their own bridge designs and construction in the coming weeks.
