Week 22: Monday, February 5th – Friday, February 9th

Advisory:

Dear parents,

This week in Advisory we practiced using three different methods to unwind: Mindful Coloring, Journaling, and Yoga. The students enjoyed the session very much! We would like to encourage you to use any of these methods at home with your children.

Hebrew:

Dear parents,

This week, both groups were hard at work reviewing the Past tense. We reviewed the various groups of conjugations in the Paal, Piel and Hitpael structures in the past tense. Next week, the students will have a quiz on the past tense on Tuesday and will use the rest of the week composing an oral piece in the past tense.

I wish everyone a relaxing weekend,

Andreea

.בנוסף, השינשינים הגיעו אלינו וערכו פעילות מרתקת על ישראל ודמוקרטיה

.היה נעים לפגוש אותכם בגאלה אתמול, המשך סוף שבוע טוב

Humanities:

Reading and Writing: The 8th grade finished reading Othello.  Students are now hard at work both preparing for their Socratic Seminar discussion and their parody projects.  Students will either parody a scene from Othello by acting it out with their group in front of the class or create a graphic novel parody on their own and present it to the class.

History: In History this week, students finished their work on the Revolutionary War and looked at the battles and tactics that helped turned the tide for the Continental Army.  Particular attention was paid to the Battle of Saratoga, the changes in military strategy by the Patriots in the battles fought in the South, and the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.  Next week, we will look at the origins of the Constitution by studying the Federalist Papers and the authors who wrote them.

Have a great weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies:

The 8th grade looked at a fascinating, real-life Jewish legal dilemma: in 1977, conjoined Siamese twins were born to an Orthodox couple in Lakewood, New Jersey. If nothing was done, both twins would die. If they were operated on and separated, one twin would live, and the other would die. The 8th graders explored the same halachic texts that Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, a respected Orthodox legal authority, consulted in order to make this difficult decision.

We also began our study of the book of Shoftim/Judges, focusing on the questions of why people make the same mistakes over and over again, and what causes a society to decline and fall. Ask your child/ren about the story of Ehud and the fat king!

Shabbat shalom,

Jessica

Math:

In Math this week we continued to work on Unit 7 which is all about angles. We look at different shapes and found all the missing angles and sides. Next week right before break each class will have a test on angles and measurements. 8X will have their test on Friday and 8Y will have their test on Wednesday.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Craig

Science:

Students in science continued with their cooking chemistry unit. They attempted the difficult task of converting flour and egg into fresh pasta. Students had confidence by making an attempt and improving on techniques required in creating this pasta. We wrap up our cooking chemistry unit with a final activity that brings into focus all these new skills and techniques learned during our  cooking chemistry unit.
