Week 17: Tuesday, January 2nd – Friday, January 5th

Hebrew:

Dear parents,

The month of January is designed as a month of individual study. the students receive assignments ahead of time and are supposed to use classwork to consult with me in order to complete the assignments successfully. The individual study is an important skill that will benefit them in high school.

I wish you a warm weekend and a happy new year,

Andreea

Humanities:

Literature and Writing: Happy New Year everyone!  This week, we started our unit on William Shakespeare’s Othello by learning about critical lens and how they are used to analyze art.  We learned about postcolonial theory and used it as a lens to critically evaluate Disney movies and the first Curious George book.  Next week, we will use this lens to evaluate the way Shakespeare both reinforces and challenges the assumptions of colonialism in his play.

History: In History, students were assigned to write a short essay on the Declaration of Independence.  Their task is to explain whether our country is currently living up to the government principles contained within the document.  Because of rehearsal for the music, this has been an independent work assignment and will be completed by Wednesday of next week on their own.

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies:

The 8th graders have begun studying the book of Joshua. We began by thinking about how Joshua might be feeling as he takes on the role of leader from Moshe: can you follow in someone else’s footsteps and still be your own person?

Next, we translated the first few psukim (verses) of chapter 2, and encountered an important new character — a prostitute in Jericho named Rachav. Through close reading, students noticed how the people of Jericho treat Rachav, and the shrewd way in which she uses their stereotypes against them.

Shabbat shalom!

Jessica

Math:

In Math this week we work on chapter 5. We figured out how solve algebraic fractions and how to do that to solve for x. Next week there will be a project given on chapter 6, congruence and similarity. They will be working on a reflections and other tessellations. The students will use a program to draw and sketch those tessellations. It’s been a good week back from break and should be an interesting month with the play going on.

Have good weekend,

Craig
