Week 13: Monday, November 27th – Friday, December 1st

Advisory

Dear parents,

This week in advisory, the students reflected on the things that we can choose in life and the things we can’t. What are our needs and how can we adjust our choices in the way we talk and listen in order to meet our and other people’s needs.

Hebrew:

Dear parents,

This week the students in HaKbatza Aleph presented their projects on education in other countries. The students in HaKbatza Bet studied compound nouns and took a vocab test and a test on compound nouns.

I wish everyone a peaceful weekend,

Andreea

Heritage:

Humanities:

Literature and Writing: Students watched the movie version of The Crucible and compared it to the play.  Students then outlined a compare and contrast paragraph looking at the similarities and differences between the two versions.  Students should finish writing their paragraph and complete their entire work packet in preparation for their test on the play this Monday.

History: Students began their unit on the American Revolution.  First, students learned about class differences in the colonies that contributed to unrest and a desire for change. Then, we learned about the differences between mercantilism and capitalism.  Finally, we began our discussion of the Enlightenment and how those ideas influenced the leaders of the Revolution.  Next week, we will learn more about the ideas of specific Enlightenment thinkers, their influence on important founding documents like the Declaration of Independence and look at how specific laws and events hardened the positions of the Patriots and Loyalists in the colonies.

Have a great weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies

Students completed our study of different ways of viewing Torah. I have been deeply impressed by their thoughtful responses to this challenging topic, and by the way they listened to and built on each other’s ideas in class discussion.

We had our second trip to Self Help on Thursday, and the 8th graders were amazing — they served food, cleared tables, poured tea, schmoozed, and danced. The last song the students danced to was “Am Yisrael Chai” – “The People of Israel live!” As I watched your children dancing to this song, surrounded by elderly Holocaust survivors, I felt incredibly moved. It was an honor to be present for such a moment.

Math:

In Math this week we continued to work on Unit 4. This unit consists of solving quadratic equations and figuring out how to write an equation when given a word problem. We talked about how a quadratic equation is a parabola on a graph which tells us tons of information.  The 8Y class has been given a packet to do in groups to help them review for their test on Tuesday. The 8X class will continue to work through unit 4 next week. They will have a test by the beginning of the week after.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend,

Craig

Science:

This week in science students conducted an experiment to discover the pH level of different substances. They learned how the concentration of hydrogen ions affect the level of pH on a molecular level. They created their own test tube experiment kit and accurately recorded the change in color of the pH indicator.
