Week 11: Monday, November 13th – Friday, November 17th, 2017

Advisory:

Dear parents,

This week in advisory we discussed the way we feel or react to various situations in middle school as part of encouraging awareness and self-monitoring skills.

Hebrew:

Dear parents,

This week students in HaKbatza Aleph worked individually on reading and writing about the education system in a country of their choice.

Students in HaKbatza Bet presented an itinerary they prepared using slideshow.

I wish everyone a peaceful weekend,

Andreea

Heritage:

Humanities:

Literature and Writing:

It was a busy week in Humanities! In Literature, we have almost finished reading and performing all of the Crucible.  In the coming weeks, we will review the themes in the story, compare it to the movie version we will watch together, take our book test, and complete our final project on modern-day witch hunts. Additionally, students completed their first vocabulary lesson on Wordly Wise online in preparation for their first vocabulary quiz this Wednesday. Finally, in Writing, students received a detailed outline for their Columbus Paper.  Students should finish their outline by this coming Wednesday so that we can start drafting after the Thanksgiving Break.  We also started working with Quill, an online program that will help students work on individual goals to improve their writing mechanics.

History:

In History, we completed and reviewed our first unit on The Americas from early human migration up through colonization and the First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s.  Students completed a timeline challenge for the unit, worked in groups to complete a detailed study guide and participated in a Jeopardy-style review game in preparation for their unit test on Monday.  When we come back from Thanksgiving Break, we will start our next unit on the American Revolution.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies:

This week the 8th graders finished the Torah! After nine years of study, this is a big deal. Students celebrated by saying “chazak chazak v’nitchazek!” together. Each 8th graders chose a phrase or pasuk/verse from Deuteronomy to inspire an art project. Our next unit will be an exploration of traditional and academic views of who wrote the Torah.
Shabbat Shalom!
Jessica

Math:

In 8th grade math we are working on factoring quadratic functions. In 8Y, students started working on Unit 4 after taking the Unit 3 test earlier this week. They are figuring out how to factor quadratic expressions without solving and when the numbers are not perfect squares. In 8X, the students are finishing up Unit 3. They will have a test on Tuesday 11/21.

I hope everyone has a great and relaxing weekend,

Craig

Science:

This week in science students conducted an experiment that focused on the concept of temperature affect chemical reaction rates. They revisited a chemical reaction experiment done a few weeks ago, however they heated and cooled the solutions. When they conducted the reaction side by side, they observed if there was a different rate between the two reactions.
