Dear parents,

It was a pleasure meeting with you and having such informative conversations on your children.

Humanities

Literature and Writing:

This week, students finished their study of rhetoric by analyzing TV commercials for their use of rhetorical devices.  Then, they outlined ways to incorporate rhetorical elements into their Christopher Columbus essays.  Additionally, students finished reading and performing Act III of The Crucible.  Next week, students will start to outline their papers, finish reading The Crucible and take plot quizzes on Acts III and IV.

History:

In History, students learned about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the brutal conditions captured slaves faced during the Middle Passage and the effect slavery had on the colonies economic growth.  Next week, students will prepare to take their first History test of the year on Colonial America.

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies

It was wonderful seeing many of you at conferences yesterday!

This week, the 8th graders explored two of Moshe’s worries: 1) B’nai Yisrael won’t be able to handle the increased freedom they’ll experience in the land of Israel, and 2) they will be negatively influenced by their neighbors. It was easy for students to relate personally to these two worries. We had powerful conversations about times when we were unable to respond to increased freedom with the appropriate amount of responsibility, and students thought about what that will mean for them in high school. 8th graders also delved deep into the question of what constitutes a self: if you are one person with your camp friends and another with your school friends and another with your family, then who are you? Do we have to be alone to be truly ourselves? How much do you share your whole self when you’re out in the world? I was moved tremendously by the vulnerability and honesty of the 8th graders as they discussed these lifelong questions.

On a more earthbound note, there will be a short vocabulary test on Tuesday. The word list is on google classroom.

Shabbat shalom,

Jessica

Math

In 8th grade math this week we are working on chapter 3. We are talking about how to factor and combine polynomials. The 8Y class will have a test next Wednesday. The 8X class will have a test the week after that.

I hope everyone has a good weekend,

Craig

Science

This week in science students conducted an experiment with the focus on physical changes. They measured the rate of temperature change as a liquid converted to gas using digital thermometers . They also conducted an experiment in order to discover how m&ms dissolve at different rates depending on the temperature of the water. This has allowed student to start discussing how molecules move at different speeds. Next week we will continue of focus on physical reactions.
