The Weather Warms Up!

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It’s hard to believe, but we’re down to the last five weeks of the school year! In fourth grade, though, that doesn’t mean the learning slows down. Students have been extra busy working on projects, preparing for the ERBs, enjoying food-based lessons in Hebrew, learning about Megillat Ruth in Judaic Studies, and getting ready to take their Israeli Restaurant Field Trip this Monday!
How can you help your fourth grader prepare for the ERBs? Make sure they get a full night’s sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast before they come to school. While they can’t truly study for these tests, they are certain to do their best if they are feeling rested and full of energy.

PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:
  • Monday, May 14 – Israeli Restaurant Field Trip
  • Tuesday, May 15-Wednesday, May 16 – Standardized Testing in School
  • Monday, May 21 – Shavuot, SCHOOL CLOSED

HEBREW with Ilana:

This week the 4th grade presented their project about different countries and their national food. Thank you for the parents that sent food for the class.  We also worked on the field trip to the Israeli restaurant. They learned the menu of the restaurant and practiced  the conversation how to order in Hebrew what they want to eat and drink. We all excited for the field trip on Monday. Please make sure that your child will wear comfortable shoes for walking.

Shabbat Shalom

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
Fourth graders have begun working on their final Judaic Studies projects, which will be on display at their end-of-the-year performance on June 7th. We also finished our Ancient Israel timeline with the publication of the Babylonian Talmud in the year 495. We’ve worked our way through over 2,000 years of history throughout this school year! As part of our last holiday unit, we began reading Megillat Ruth and learning about the upcoming holiday of Shavuot, the Jewish people’s combination birthday/anniversary celebration. We are looking forward to seeing where Megillat Ruth fits into the rest of our Ancient Israel timeline next week.
Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Alisa:

In Writing, we are coming to the end of our information book project, where students are writing about topics they know a lot about. We have books about ice cream, Cape Town, video games, best places to go bike riding in New York City, and many more. Throughout this project, we have focused on what qualities make a great information book, such as including a lot of detailed information, painting a picture with words to immerse the reader in a scene or a moment, and writing attention grabbing introductions. Soon, fourth graders will be celebrating their hard work with a Ted Talk themed publishing celebration in the classroom.

In Math this week, we concluded our study of area and perimeter of rectangles and composite figures. We also started doing number talks once a week, in which students mentally solve a sequence of related equations, followed by a couple students sharing their strategies for how they solved the problem. It’s an opportunity for students to think critically about numbers and their relationships, practice mental math, and work on explaining their thinking orally in a way that others can understand it.
