The Final Stretch Begins

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
Can you believe we’re already in mid-April and that there are only nine weeks of school left? We can’t believe it either! With so many exciting events coming up, the time is sure to fly by, and we still have so much left to learn. We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Pesach vacation.
We began the final leg of the school year with a commemoration of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, yesterday. Our guest speaker was child survivor Dori Katz, who beautifully told us the story of her childhood and survival in Belgium. Students were fascinated, learned a great deal, and asked many intelligent questions.
Please see the “Coming Soon” section below for the long list of upcoming events, and mark them down on your calendars. We’re looking forward to them!

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week, we returned to our Chumash unit to learn about Ya’akov’s marriage to Rachel and Leah, and how he was tricked by his uncle Lavan into marrying them both. Students are now reading and translating straight out of the Chumash text. They’ve really made great progress! We also learned this week about the history and cultural, historical, and agricultural significance of Sefirat Ha’Omer. Students began their Omer projects, wherein they each receive a few days of the Omer, and examine the lessons we are meant to learn on each day. Next week, these projects will be visible on the hallway bulletin board.
Finally, we talked a little bit about Yom HaShoah and the Holocaust, specifically about the disappointing response to the crisis from the USA, Canada, and Allies, and about those Righteous Among the Nations who risked (and in some cases gave) their lives to save as many people as they could. The specific heroes we discussed include Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, Japanese representative Chiune and his wife Yukiko Sugihara, Polish nurse and social worker Irena Sendler, and American journalist Varian Fry.

GENERAL STUDIES with Alisa:
In math, fourth graders are excitedly working through our study of area. Students have been working on finding the area of a rectangle and composite figures using a grid to help them. We discovered that you can multiply the dimensions of the length and width to find the area of a rectangle.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this week was the beginning of our new social studies unit on the Oregon Trail. Students have begun orienting themselves in their new families. We have the Miller Family, Aldridge Family, Findley Family, and the Hughes Family. 4th graders developed their characters, choosing first and middle names, age, and occupation/skills. Next week, we will be creating our diaries that we will keep as we head out on our journey on the trail. Students will use tea to dye the cover to make it look old, and learn a binding technique to complete their journals.
