Ten Days of Awe

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
We hope you all enjoyed your Rosh Hashanah weekends and that your new year is off to a great start! Our fourth graders have been working hard, learning their new curriculum, saying Tefillot with fifth and sixth grade, performing Taschlich at the Gowanus, and meeting their new Kindergarten Buddies! We’re very excited for the upcoming Sukkah Sleepover, and will send information about it in the coming week.
Have a meaningful and easy Yom Kippur, and G’mar Chatimah Tovah! -The Fourth Grade Team

HEBREW with Ilana:

This week the fourth grade worked on a song  “As Long As”  (Kol Od). The song is about beginning of the year and first day of school. They had vocabulary form the song and we worked on comprehension, writing sentences and conversation between the father and the son in the song. On Monday the students will have their first quiz.

Here is the link for the song.

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
The fourth grade has been learning a lot about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We created projects expressing the feelings and sensations of the High Holidays (on display on the bulletin board outside our classroom) and played games to differentiate between the various Laws and Traditions of the holidays. We also read the Book of Jonah and discussed the various ways Justice can be interpreted. Finally, we learned the chilling and thought-provoking story of the Lamps of Life, which further reflected on the topic of justice, punishment, reward, and what constitutes fairness.

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
This was a FANTASTIC week in the fourth grade. On Thursday, fourth graders finally met their buddies. They spent the afternoon on Wednesday preparing an amazing scavenger hunt for them on the ground floor. It was incredibly sweet to see them together and the fourth graders are more than ready for this new exciting role. In social studies, we have started our very first simulation: The Colonies Quest! In this unit, each fourth grader is reenacting was it was like to travel from Europe to settle the New World. Be sure to ask them what they purchased for their journey today! The class has been very busy writers week, too. Using improv theater games, fourth graders crafted and developed fascinating characters for their realistic fiction stories. Next up is to start mapping out the plot and filling in each scene. Have a wonderful weekend and g’mar chatimah tova!
