Social Studies
To close our unit on the Caribbean we were so lucky to have Georgia, Rohan’s babysitter, come in and talk about her experience living in Jamaica. The second graders prepared questions for Georgia to learn more information from someone who actually lived in the Caribbean. There were such insightful questions such as, “Is school different in Jamaica?”, “What do most people like to eat in Jamaica?”, and “What was your favorite thing about growing up in Jamaica?” Georgia shared that she worked in the military doing accounting and that she loved eating fresh fish cooked exactly how you want it right on the beach. She taught us what the colors of the flag symbolize, and even spoke to us in some broken English, the dialect more commonly used in Jamaica. We are so lucky that Georgia was kind enough to come and teach us about Jamaica and share some of her experiences with us!
Ask your child to talk about one interesting thing Georgia taught us!
Math
This week we have delved into learning how to tell time. We reviewed the basic, like there are 60 minutes in an hour and the small hand of the clock is the hour hand, and even made out own clocks to help us tell time. We learned that when the minute hand ticks, so does the hour hand but much more slowly. This means that if the time is 9:30 and the minute hand is at the 6, meaning 30 minutes have passed, the hour hand should be in between the 9 and the 10, because half of the hour has passed. Next week we will begin learning about am and pm, as well as elapsed time.
Over the weekend, practice reading clocks at different times during the day. If your child has an analog watch, encourage them to wear it to school so they can practice telling time with it!
Science
The scientists were back in action this week! Half of the group planted cucumber seeds in soil from our garden and the other half with organic soil from the store. Each pair also planted a seed in either humus, sand, or clay. Everyone predicted which seed and soil combination would sprout first, which last, and how many days it would be before they saw their first sprout. Only after four days, two of the seeds popped out from the garden soil, one from the humus, and even one that was buried in the sand!
