September 28: Getting into the School Groove!

Math

The 7th Grade has been working hard learning different techniques for finding the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM) for groups of numbers. They also learned about what makes a number a perfect square or perfect cube and how to find square roots and cube roots of numbers by utilizing factorization. They will be studying hard and spending class time reviewing for their upcoming test on Friday, October 5th. Good luck, 7th grade!

Humanities

In English/Language Arts, students are onto week 3 of the vocabulary journey! Please continue to look for Greek and Latin roots in your daily literary experiences: Pan (all), Omnis (all), Holos (whole), Totus (whole), Claudere (to close). The ancient phrase for this week is: Omne corpus mutabile est. Every object is subject to change. – Cicero. Upon our return next week, we’ll be reviewing the structure for a literary analysis essay and diving in the wonderful world of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar

In History, we are examining the reasons for the rise of the Roman Republic. WHY did the later republic see the growth of territory and the proliferation of trade? What are the events that characterized the end of the Roman Republic? Though we are using the word “republic,” is there a more accurate word to describe the structure of the government?

Hebrew

The seventh grade continued our unit on the “five senses”.
These past couple of weeks we read a folk tale story and students came up with a large list of words for a word bank connect to the senses.
The words were translated broken down to nouns\ adjectives and will be used for the next assignments. A quizlet set has been created for students to review the list of words on line, they can find a link to quizlet in their google classroom or search on quizlet for 7K חושים or 7J חושים.

Wishing you all a חג שמח!

Judaic Studies
The 7th graders are exploring the development of Yom Kippur in the Torah and the Mishna. Working with a variety of partners, students have translated four mishnayot about Yom Kippur. We are building skills; students are learning how to identify rabbinic opinions and halachic (legal) terms. The 7th graders mastered the content through discussion, written reflections on google classroom, and creative projects, like turning a mishna into a skit (see photos below!). We also explored deeper questions: why did the rabbis choose to interpret “you shall make yourselves suffer” in the way that they did? Would it be better if each person had to choose how to suffer on Yom Kippur, so the experience was more personalized and individualized? What happens when a person’s desire to observe the holiday endangers his/her health? It’s been a pleasure learning and discussing with your enthusiastic and thoughtful 7th graders!
Chag sameach!
