Our First Full Week of 5th Grade!

What an amazing first full week of 5th grade! We are so excited to share our week with the Hannah Senesh Community, and we hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Shabbat Shalom!

HUMANITIES: The 5th graders were truly tested this week in Humanities, both with challenging material and the new realities that come with being a middle school student. I am happy to say they rose to the challenge every day! In Writing, students started their Personal Narrative Unit by choosing small moments from their lives to develop into full narrative stories. In reading, students read more short stories, learned about story arcs, and examined what really makes a story a story. Finally, in Social Studies, students practiced identifying Cause and Effect; this was really challenging for them, and they persevered and mastered this skill anyway! Students also started their Current Events projects by picking a current event and planning their presentations. I’m so proud of every student for pushing through this week and coming out on top!-Tony

MATH: I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Back-to-School Night this Mondayand introducing you all to Kelly Cho who will be teaching fifth and seventh grade math during my maternity leave starting September 25Fifth graders are continuing their study of Whole Numbers and have covered estimation and approximation.  Next week, they will begin looking at factors and multiples and prime factorization.-Geneva

JUDAICS:

Students will be writing the weekly blog for Judaics. “Blog Writer” is one of the classroom jobs this year. Each student will have this opportunity a few times this year. I hope you enjoy hearing firsthand from them what class has been like for them this week!

On Monday, we got our chevrutas (learning partners) and signed up for reading Torah. We also learned the opening of every bracha (blessing) including the bracha that we do before we start every class, which is the blessing on studying Torah. In the rest of the week we worked on our blessing packets and learned skills for working with our chevruta. We started using google classroom and we are learning about Teshuva. We learned to translate parts of Rambam’s steps of Teshuva. It was a good first week in Judaics studies.Thank you Laura! -Shir Ariel

“We are learning about Teshuvah and what Rambam said about the steps we need to take to do Teshuvah. We learned how if you steal or do any kind of sin you must follow the five steps. We acted out these steps in class.” – Cole RIckman

Shabbat Shalom!

Science: The 5th graders this week started discovering the scientific method and apply this knowledge to their first experiment. The experiment was to see which paper airplane design could fly the furthest. Within pairs they worked together to test prototypes before created their final plane that would be used in the experiment. Everyone was respectful and engaged and measure accurately their results. We cannot wait to continue with this plane experiment next week.-Mike

HEBREW: Wow what a week! The 5th grade started their first unit of the year “Food & Family”. This week we went over the rules of using an infinitive when writing and speaking. Students write about their favorite foods and had conversations with one another. In addition, we worked on a listening comprehension activity,  in which students listened to a conversation and then practiced repeating it with a partner. Shabbat Shalom!-Yehuda
