Hebrew

This week as part of our unit on Music the 7th graders read articles and research on how Music has a direct impact on our brains and how it influences our life since the time of the Bible and till today.

Science

The 7th Grade STEAM projects are complete and students are excited to demonstrate their function next Tuesday during STEAM Fest. The culmination of weeks of work has produced a sense of accomplishment and pride for each created Rube Goldberg device. The imaginations of the students have produced an array of unique devices! We await our 7th grade parent guests next Tuesday at 8:45am.

Humanities

The 7A Advisory group, as well as myself and Kelly, took a trip to Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School this morning! We taught their kindergarten classes about Hanukkah and made a macaroni menorah! We read a book called How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Chanukah? I am so proud of our students! They did a great job. I’m also extremely grateful to the 7B advisory group. Many of them were critical to our success – they helped create and organize materials this morning. Thank you!

We have an upcoming cumulative test on our previous weeks of vocabulary words on Tuesday, December 12th. I’m extremely excited about this, and I know students will do a great job studying and helping one another learn their words.

Judaic Studies

It’s been an amazing week studying the history of the Second Temple period with your 7th graders! Ask them why Jews pelted Alexander Yannai with etrogim in the Temple during Sukkot!

The focus of this unit is on how to respond when a society is in crisis. Should you try to preserve social institutions and do your best to keep things the way they’ve always been, like the Sadducees? Should you respond with violence and a refusal to compromise, like the Biryonim? Should you withdraw from the corrupt world, like the Essenes? Or should you radically reimagine the way society can work, and be willing to compromise to move forward, like the Pharisees? I am eager to continue exploring this fascinating time period with your children.  It’s been a delight hearing students connect their learning to issues we face in our world today.

Shabbat shalom,

Jessica

Math

After weeks of simplifying and factoring algebraic statements, the 7th graders started to solve linear equations in one variable this week! Soon the unit will be over and we will be working with ratio, rate and speed.
