Science

This week in science we are finishing the building of our custom solar cars. Students have been comparing their design with other groups. They have naturally tested the function of their cars in direct sunlight and went back to improve on their design so the car can move in a straight line. Next week we will be testing these cars for maximum velocity and how straight they can travel using the power of the sun. Exciting times with our final weeks in science.

Judaic Studies

7th graders are reading and translating chapter 13 of Bmidbar/the book of Numbers. Moshe picks the most respected members of Bnai Yisrael, leaders from each tribe, to go and scout out the land. What could go wrong? Students asked thoughtful questions and practiced answering them with support from the text. They began work on their final project for this unit: a travel brochure for the land of Canaan from the perspective of the spies. In addition, there will be a vocabulary quiz on this material on Tuesday of next week for 7Y and on Wednesday for 7X. The vocabulary words are in the back of the students’ packets.

Shabbat shalom!

Math

7X started learning “Proportions” this week and in this unit (unit 14), they will learn to understand the scale factor of a scale drawing, draw a simple scale drawing, understand the scale of a map, calculate the actual distance between two points and the area of a region from a scale drawing, use ratio to solve problems involving scales, understand the ideas of direct proportion and inverse proportion, determine whether two quantities are in direct proportion or inverse proportion, and solve practical problems in direct proportion and inverse proportion.

7Y finished learning the materials on Unit 16: Probability of Simple Events. The last unit to cover for this school year is Unit 17: Probability of Combined Events. The students will learn to calculate the probability of a simple combined event using a tree diagram, identify mutually exclusive events, understand and apply the addition of probabilities for mutually exclusive events, identify independent events, understand and apply the multiplication of probabilities for independent events, and apply the learned concepts to solve problems in daily life.

Hebrew

This week students finished the Avant assessment testing. The results of this assessment will help us track the students progress from the beginning of the year and help us track the progress from year to year in all 4 skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). In addition students started their final Hebrew project his week.

Humanities

Students finished their Renaissance research papers! I am SO excited for parents and family to read them next week. We are working diligently to create a Renaissance world for the community to experience. Today, 7th graders spent time with their 3rd grade Buddy class. We listened to student reports and saw some parallels between research at different grade levels. We loved seeing what the 3rd graders have been working on and sharing what research we have been conducting.

Advisory -Guest speaker “Mor Sapir”

On October 2014, Mor survived a snow storm and avalanche in the Annapurna ridge of the Himalaya Mountain in Nepal. Four of His expedition friends died there, and he had the luck to survive. The avalanche caused a major impact on Mor’s life and as a result he lost all of his 10 fingers due to frostbite when trying to save his life in the snow.

The limb injury was very dramatic for a basketball player and bicycle rider like him but after a long period of hospitalization and challenging rehabilitation, he started to search for assistance in trying to solve daily problems which there were no efficient solutions to. Since then Mor has come a long way and today he is a world champion in rock climbing!

Mor shared his journey with the 7th grade class and spoke about perseverance, and how he continues on in life despite his disability .
