Learning about Fall
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We hope you had a fun and restful Thanksgiving break! We had lots of fun this week in Kindergarten. The children were excited to tell us stories about their Thanksgiving weekend and then wrote and illustrated them in their journals.
In Math, we learned direction and position words, such as under, over, above, next to, on top, on the bottom, etc. We also introduced a clock to the children and learned about clock’s “face” and “hands.” We practiced using clocks to tell time to the hour. Then, we discussed what we do at different times of the day and every child gave an example of what they do at a particular time (for example, at 8pm I go to sleep, at 10am I eat snack, etc.). This week, we began learning numbers 10-20. We counted objects and practiced writing these numbers.
In English Language Arts, we learned the letter Kk and the sound /k/ it makes (as in ‘king’). We practiced forming upper and lowercase letters Kk using our Handwriting Without Tears books, wooden planks, playdough, shaving cream, and finding words that start with K and drawing pictures of them.
In Writing, we are finishing up and practicing reading our “How To…” Books for our publishing party on December 8.
In Science, we continued our forces and motion unit. We played charades with different motion words and talked about how different objects in our classroom moved. We wrote about and drew a picture of our favorite motion.
In Social Studies, we read a poem called “Leaves.” We went for a fall hike looking for signs of Fall. We wrote and decorated a page about our hike.
In Judaics/ Hebrew this week we told the story of Chanukah. We danced and sang songs such as “Banu Choshech Legaresh,” “Chanukah Chanukah,“ and “Sevivon Sov Sov Sov.” We learned related vocabulary such as chanukiyah-Chanukah menorah, sevivon-dreidel , nerot- candles, kad Shemen-pitcher of oil, Levivot-latkes, and sufganiyot-donuts.
We also continued learning about the fourth day of creation in which G-d created the sun (shemesh) moon (yareach) and stars (kochavim). We played letter games such as Alef Bet yoga, Hangman in hebrew, memory and games matching Hebrew words that we already learned with their beginning letter and sound. The students sang the Alef Bet song and were very excited to practice Hebrew letters through play and games.
We read books such as “Chanukah” by Miriam Nerlove and “Kova Maksim Kova Eem Pasim” by Ami Rubinger. We are very excited the holiday is near and can’t wait for both our trip to the Jewish Children’s Museum (Dec 7th) and the upcoming Chanukah holiday.
