Lag B’Omer and Kesher Day
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had a fun week in Kindergarten! We had lots of fun celebrating Lag B’Omer at our Yom Sports Field Day in Prospect Park! We also enjoyed welcoming our grandparents and special friends on Kesher Day!
In Math, we began our unit on measuring. We learned about which objects are longer and shorter than each other and how to measure objects using cubes, paper clips, and rulers.
We also measured how tall we are now and compared it to our height in September – see our chart on the pictures below!
In English Language Arts, we continued learning about silent -e. We learned the sound and motion for long /u/ (as in mule) and practiced reading and matching words with long /u/ sound and silent e to their pictures.
In Writing, we continued our Poetry unit. We have had lots of fun reading each other’s favorite poems and have begun to illustrate some of them for our books. We made a few class poetry books: “Down by the Bay,” “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” and more. The children will also learn to write some short poems starting next week.
In Social Studies, we continued our City Block Unit. We split into 2 groups and learned about the subway and the grocery store. We learned about people who work there, what they do, and how they run. We also had a chance to use our newfound knowledge through play and activities. We created our own grocery shopping lists and used them in our pretend grocery store. We also explored NYC subway maps and created our own train system with train tracks and play trains.
In Science, we continued our unit Exploring Plants and Animals. We observed our alfalfa seeds, pea seeds, and lima beans. We noticed how our plants have begun to grow and recorded it on our observation sheet
Hebrew and Judaics
This week we practiced describing our daily schedule at school in Hebrew. Related words are: Mifgash boker- morning meeting, Tfila- prayer, chatif- snack, Ivrit- Hebrew, Hafsaka- recess, cheshbon- Math, yahadut- judaic, aruchat tzohorayim- lunch, anglit- English, omanut- art , musica- music, hitaamloot-PE (physical education), Habayta- home (bound).
We sang the song “Ani Kam baboker “ which is about the morning routine. We read the book “Hayom hakachol” “ Tfilyla” and “Charuzim Teimimim.”
This week we also celebrated and learned about Lag B’Omer and about Rabbi Akiva who said “Ve’ahavta le’re’aacha kamocha “ (you should love your friend just like you love yourself). The children sang the song “Amar rabbi akiva” and discussed about the concept of “Chaverim tovim “ (good friends). We drew children dancing together around the Medura (bonfire),as is the custom in Israel on Lag baomer. In addition, we counted the Omer every day preparing for Chag Shavuot, the holiday of Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah).
Shabbat Shalom,
Regina, Rachel, Irit, and Ilana

Art with Iviva:
This week was our first time using watercolor paints. We learned how to take good care of our brushes and paints, dipping our brush in water in between changing colors, and we also learned how to blend colors. Some of our paintings are hanging up on the bulletin board in the hallway around the corner from our classrooms – look for them there.
