January’s End

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It’s hard to believe it, but we are officially past the halfway point of the school year! Fourth graders have begun their social action trips to the Brooklyn Autism Center. Many thanks to our parent chaperons! We also enjoyed watching a rehearsal of the Eighth Grade production of Beauty and the Beast, which was performed at school this week. We are now looking forward to longer Fridays beginning next week, and the Tu B’Shvat fair on Wednesday!
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team
PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:
  • Monday, January 29 – Spring After School Programs Begin
  • Wednesday, January 31 – Tu B’Shvat
  • Friday, February 2 – Long Fridays Begin – 2:30 Dismissal
HEBREW with Ilana:
This week the 4th grade presented their activity for Student day. They also wrote a summery about their activity: describing it, writing how they feel as a teacher and what  vocabulary they learn. Also, we learned a story in the workbook and they have to practice and record their reading and email it to me. They can use Vocaroo.com or any other website or device and email to ilanahebrew@gmail.com

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Yahadut, fourth graders finished their David and Saul projects, wherein they retold the story from multiple character viewpoints in the form of a news report. We also began learning about Machloket L’Shem Shamayim (Constructive Conflict/ Arguing for the Sake of Heaven) in preparation for our Tu B’Shvat lesson next week.
In Chumash, we began our second Parsha of the year, VaYeitzei, which students are learning straight from the Chumash itself and without the aid of a workbook. They are very eager to get started and have tackled the task with enthusiasm and determination! This is a big step forward in their Chumash learning!
In Torah Reading, students were introduced to the Pocket Torah App on the school iPads, which they will be using to learn Torah trope and readings in the coming weeks. Please send a pair of headphones or earbuds with your child to school starting this coming Wednesday. They will need them until February break. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
I am so excited to share that every fourth grader has completed their American Revolution research projects! They have worked incredibly hard for weeks in writing and social studies on each step of the way: research, taking notes, organizing, recording, typing, editing, revising and more. Next week they are going to be presenting their speeches to their classmates! In Math, we have started working on fractions of a set. This real-life skill focuses on questions such as, “If there are 20 fourth graders and a fifth of them forgot their homework last night, how many students forgot their homework?” Next week, we are wrapping up our fractions unit and moving on to decimals! Shabbat shalom to all!
SCIENCE with Sammi:
Over the past few weeks, the fourth grade has been learning about fats. Your scientists have learned about “go fats” (healthy fats in unsaturated fats and low saturated fats) and “slow fats” (unhealthy fats in saturated fats and trans fats). We are focusing on understanding the positive benefits of “go fats”, such as energy and lower cholesterol, because fats get a bad reputation out there! We have also begun understanding food labels and solving math problems with the information provided. Finally, the fourth graders are in the process of learning how to test for fats with both liquids and solid foods.
