Hanukkah Hebrew Play and more fun!
Dear Families,
We had a fun week in Kindergarten! We began with the beautiful Hebrew Hanukkah Show. The children felt very proud and excited to speak, sing and dance during the play. We ended the week with a lovely holiday party – with Hanukkah cookies baked in Hebrew class and games and songs.
In English Language Arts, we were practicing letter N and the sound it makes. The children practiced writing lower and uppercase Nn and looked for words that begin with this letter.
In Writing, we wrote and illustrated a page in our journals “On Hanukkah I liked…” We continued working in our Reading groups, and each group read a “just right level” book and played letter-sound games to enrich our reading skills.
In Math, we continued working on numbers 10-20. Through games, movement activities and in our work book, we practiced organizing the numbers in order, comparing them, recognizing the numbers and matching the numbers to different amounts of objects, including dots on a ten frame. Ask your child to draw a Ten Frame for you and show you different amounts of dots.
We finished our second Math Book and the children were very excited to take their books home! Happy Counting!
In Science we continued our “Forces of Motion” unit. We learned about forces on moving objects and how to stop them. We experimented racing cars down a track that was propped up to different heights and compared how far the cars traveled. We also tried different ways of stopping the cars. Lastly, we learned about pinwheels and how they move with air.
Hebrew and Judaics
This week we celebrated Chanukah. The students were so excited to perform in the Chanukah play! We celebrated the Chanukah holiday by playing games such as lotto, Bingo games as well as the dreidel game. In the dreidel game each child had to earn 18 coins in order to win. Each letter on the dreidel has a value so the children practiced adding points, counting in Hebrew, and saying the phrase “Nes Gadol Haya Sham” as well as the corresponding letters Nun, Gimel, Hey and Shin. The children sang songs and danced the “Banu Choshech Legaresh” song, as well as the Chanukah blessings, “Hanerot Halaloo” and other songs such as “Bouu Hena Yeladim,” ״Chanukah Chanukah,״ and “Ner li Ner li.” We read books such as “Grandma’s Latkes,” by Malka Drucker and “Sammy Spider’s First Chanuka“ , “Hawoo Ad Eser” by Ami Rubinger, and “Miriam vehayam” by Mirik Snir.
We also practiced the verb Bah / baah ( arrive) as we discussed the different ways we come to school such as : Train- rakevet, car -mechonit, bus – otoboos. Children formed sentences such as “Ani bah barakevet” (I arrive by train) or “ Ani bah bamechonit” (I arrive by car).
We reviewed related vocabulary to the holiday such as: Levivot – latkes , sufganiyot- donuts, chanukiyah- Chanukah menorah, sevivon- dreidel , nerot- candles, kad Shemen- pitcher of oil) .
Have a great winter break and Shabbat Shalom.
Regina, Rachel, Irit, and Ilana
