Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Brooklyn Museum and more!
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had a week full of learning and fun events. The children enjoyed the trip to Brooklyn Museum learning about “Animals in Egyptian Art.” Thank you to all the chaperones for helping us to have a safe trip. Thank you, Zina, Lisa, Shira, and Jen!
In Math, we began our unit on word problems. We practiced making up addition stories, asking mathematical questions and learning how to turn them into number sentences (3+4=7).
In English Language Arts, we continued our Poetry unit. The children learned about and practiced writing acrostic poems. First, we wrote poems where each line started with a letter of their name, and then we wrote an acrostic poem about spring. For Mother’s Day, we read fun books about moms, such as “Is Your Mama and Llama?” by Deborah Guarino and “Pirate Mom” by Deborah Underwood, and wrote poems “The Important Thing about Mom” based on the book “The Important Thing” by Margaret Wise Brown. The kids can’t wait to share their poems with you to show how much they love their moms!
During the week, we continued practicing silent -e. We learned the motion for long e (as in ‘sleep’) and practiced reading silent e words.
In Social Studies, we continued our City Block Unit. After children decided that they would like to research how grocery stores and subway work, we continued our study about these two places as part of our City Block unit. We visited the subway station and the grocery store across the street and interviewed the people who work there. Then, we sketched and recorded the most interesting things we each learned there.
In Science, we continued our unit Exploring Plants and Animals. Every day, we observed our caterpillars and ladybugs, and recorded their metamorphosis. In addition, we continued to observe our alfalfa seeds, pea seeds, and lima beans. We noticed how our plants are growing and recorded it on our observation sheet! On Thursday, we reviewed everything we have learned about fish, birds, reptiles and mammals and made posters about each kind of animals using pictures from National Geographic magazines.
Hebrew and Judaic
This week we learned about Shabbat by preparing for our beautiful celebration about the creation of the world. The children said their lines in Hebrew and practiced singing and dancing “Shalom Alechem”, “Hayom Yom Shish’i”and “Mi ohev et hashabat.” They decorated their Shabbat boxes with colorful paper and worked on their Shabbat books. We also counted the Omer every day preparing for Chag Shavuot, the holiday of Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah). The children drew Mt. Sinai and decorated with flowers. We sang songs for Shavuot such as “Hineni muchan umzuman” and “Torah Torah.” . We read the book “Haaryeh Sheli” and “Anachnu metaylim” by Ami Rubinger. We reviewed words in the book that relate to transportation such as: mechonit- car, autobus-bus, rakevet- train, aviron-airplane as well as words related to spring- aviv, for example: parpar- butterfly, perach- flower, etz- tree, Tziporim-birds, dvorim- bees, alim- leaves.
Next Friday, we will have our Kabbalat Shabbat Ceremony from 9:00-10:00 am. Please join us for this wonderful celebration of learning!
Shabbat Shalom!
Have a nice weekend,
Regina, Irit, Rachel, and Ilana
