First Grade: Week of November 6th

First Graders started a new writing unit this week: opinion writing! To begin this unit, they all became judges of a polished rock competition. They picked their favorite rock and wrote about why it was the best. First graders learned about what it means to be a fair judge and how to convince someone using lots of reasons and adding details. First graders then began writing opinion pieces on some of their favorite things.

This week in Math we learned about fact families, and practiced using related facts to find the missing numbers in addition and subtraction sentences. We also made fact family turkeys to decorate our hallway and wish everyone in the school a happy Thanksgiving.

We learned to spell the word “because” this week. First graders learned a fun chant and practiced spelling “because” in their opinion pieces.

In Hebrew this week, we learned the letter dalet. We also learned the verb nach ( to rest, masculine) and nacha (to rest, feminine) and we practiced using those verbs in writing and speaking. The first graders were so proud to write full sentences in Hebrew for the first time.

In Yahadut, we learned a new prayer from the amidah called hael hakadosh, which we thank God for the holly thing (siddur, mezuzah, etc.) and times (Shabbat, chagim, etc.) in our life.

This week Parasha is Chayei Sarah. This parasha is about finding a wife for Isaac. We learned about how kind and giving Rebecca was and we thought about times when we did acts of chesed (acts of kindness) and acted like Rebecca.

Shabbat Shalom!

Ilana, Rebecca, and Jeanette
