First Grade News: Week of November 27th
Reminder: Our 1st grade publishing party is on Thursday, December 7th. Coffee with Karen will be from 8:15 to 8:45 and our Publishing Party begins at 8:45. We look forward to seeing you all there.
First grade writers are hard at work getting ready for their publishing party next week. First graders worked with their writing partners to revise and edit their opinion writing pieces. Next week they will add the finishing touches!
Our sight words this week are we, when, your, can, and said. These are words that we put on our word wall. We expect first graders to use the word wall to spell these words correctly in their writing.
We have started a geometry unit in math. This week first graders learned to identify and classify plane shapes. They also learned about halves and quarters.
In Social Studies we continued learning about the community helpers within our school. The red stars interviewed our school nurse, Rivkie. Next week the blue stars will interview Eddie.
In Science first graders learned about the water cycle. They experimented absorbing water and raining with sponges that mimicked clouds.
First graders continue to participate in biweekly reading groups where they get a chance to read books with friends, play phonics games, and learn new reading strategies!
In Hebrew, we learned the letter gimmel. We also learned the verbs gar (live, masculine) and gara (live, feminine) and we all shared where we live. We had a conversation about ourselves, including our names, where we live, what grade we are in, how old we are, and what we love. Then, we worked on a project where we wrote sentences in Hebrew about ourselves. The first graders where so proud to be able to write so many sentences and can’t wait to share it with you on our publishing party next Thursday.
In Yahadut, we learned a new prayer from the amidah called chanun hamarbeh lisloach. We spoke about the importance of apologizing to people when we make mistakes and forgiving others after they say that they are sorry.
In Parasha, first graders learned about Parashat Vayishlach. This is when Jacob and Esav reunite and apologize to each other. This parasha is an example to the new prayer that we learned this week and we continued our discussion about the importance of saying sorry and forgiving each other.
Shabbat Shalom!
