First Grade News
This week first grade writers got serious about series writing! They practiced “showing not telling,” including chapters, and adding patterns to elevate their writing. Each first grader has published at least one book in their series, and we look forward to reading the second and third installments!
In Math we learned to tell time to the hour and half hour. First graders practiced reading clocks, played “what time is it?” BINGO, and made their own practice clocks.
In Social Studies we have been preparing for Earth Day. We’ve learned all about neighborhoods and communities, and now it is time to learn how to take care of them. This week we discussed the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
In Science we got to observe our newest classroom animals: guppies!
Now that the weather has gotten warmer, we’re able to resume our Friday gardening with Anne. In First Grade, part of our social action is taking care of the flowers and trees around our school.
In Hebrew, we started traveling through the state of Israel! We started in the north in the port city of Haifa, made our way to the Kineret and through the busy streets of Tel Aviv. Students wrote sentences in Hebrew of what we can find in each place and drew pictures of each city inspired by images they saw in photographs, videos and books. We look forward to continue our traveling to new places in Israel next week.We learned about the omer, the time between Passover to the next holiday, Shavuot. Every morning at the end of tefilah we count how many days we are into the omer. When we reach the forty-ninth day of the omer, we will be ready to celebrate Shavuot!
This week parasha is parashat Shemini. We spoke about which animals are considered kosher and that kosher animals have split hooves and kosher fish have both fins and scales. We then looked at pictures of different animals to see if they are kosher or not. We also learned that many kosher foods have a special sign on the label to show us that they are kosher.
