First Grade News
Thank you for sending in books for Malawi. They were delivered last week. This week got to see pictures of our books in their new home!
In Writing Workshop we revised and edited our first series books. To revise, we looked at the “Henry and Mudge” series and noticed what the author, Cynthia Rylant, put in her books to make them special. We noticed that she gave lots of details, made patterns, and made the action exciting. We will continue to add to our series after the break.
First grade mathematicians practiced using their most important math tool this week, their brains! We reviewed different mental math strategies, such as using number bonds, doubles facts, and adding by tens.
We reread all four nominees for the Irma Black Awards this week. First graders uses their opinion writing skills to give each book a rating and tell what they liked and didn’t like about it. We entered our class vote on Thursday. The majority of our class voted for After The Fall by Dan Santat. The winner will be announced in mid-April.
First grade scientists continued to learn about our new class animals, snails! They each read a book about snails and added the information they learned to our class chart.
We had such an exciting week in the Hebrew classroom this week. We were busy cleaning and preparing for our Seder. We also made Matzah with Rabbi David Klein. It was such a special experience! (The matzah was not made in a kosher for Passover kitchen.) Enjoy the pictures below!
