First Grade News
We had a blast on our trip to the National Museum of Mathematics this week! Check out our pictures below.
This week first grade writers picked a piece to be published next week. They learned how to use pictures to add more information to their teaching books, and started to edit their pieces. We also started to plan for our class publishing party. So far, we are thinking that we will share our stories and have a dance party!
As part of our Social Studies unit on mapping, first graders became cartographers and made maps of the first and second floors of our school. Students designed symbols for the map keys, such as a computer to show an office.
First grade scientists have been taking care of our herb garden. Each day two students are responsible for making sure the plants have enough water. On Friday we saw the first sprouts!
In Hebrew, we spent time learning about clothing and what we wear. We learned the verbs lovesh (to wear, masculine) andloveshet (to wear, feminine). Students spent time writing sentences about the clothing that they and their friends are wearing. We learned the words aroch (long) and katzar (short) and learned how to use those words when speaking and writing. The students also wrote about their hair and the color of their eyes using aroch, katzar, yesh li (I have) and ein li (I don’t have). We had a party in class to celebrate our accomplishments – finishing learning the Hebrew alef-bet and our nitzanim workbooks. I encourage you to look through your child workbook to see the amazing work that he/she have done! The first graders were also very excited to get a certificate for learning all of the Hebrew letters.
In Parasha, we learned about Parashat Mishpatim. We spoke about the addional laws that God gave the Jewish people. We also spoke about what it means to be responsible. We thought about thing that we are responsible for at school and at home and we had so much fun playing responsibility/kindness bingo.
During the month of Adar, the month of Purim, it is a tradition to do things that make us happy. To get ourselves into the Purim spirit, all teachers, staff, and students should come to school in pajamas on Thursday, February 15th (Rosh Chodesh Adar – or the first day of the month of Adar)! Please note, that the date on the physical school calendar says Friday, February 16th, but there has been a change of date. Students must wear shoes or slippers.
