First Grade News: 1/2 – 1/5

We were happy to see everyone back after the break!

This week we began learning about Dr. Martin Luther King. First graders shared what they already know about Dr. King and posed the questions they still have. We watched a brainpop video about his life and read “Martin’s Big Words” and “Young Martin’s Promise.” They learned about what segregation is and we discussion how Dr. King fought for what was right in a peaceful way. First graders will share some of the work they’ve done at our Martin Luther King Tekes next Friday, January 12th.

This week, we began our next writing unit: information books. In this unit, first graders will learn how to write non fiction books about something they are experts in. For example, some students are writing books about lions, drawing, and swimming.

In Math we wrapped up our unit on place value and comparing numbers. Next week we will return to addition and subtraction.

In Hebrew, We learned the letter ayin and spent time reviewing vocabulary and learning some new words.

In yahadut, we learned a new prayer from the amidah called mevarech hashanim. We spoke about the importance of taking care of our Earth and what can we do to keep it a clean and safe place.

This week Parasha is parashat shemot.  We learned about the story of baby Moses and how he defended the Israelites despite the fact that he appeared to be an Egyptian. We spoke about the concept of slavery.  We also thought about how Moses got upset when we saw people being mistreated, and we discussed how we should treat other people.

Happy New Year!
