Early February

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It’s hard to believe we are fast approaching February break! If you know that your child will be missing school next week (or after vacation ends), please let your fourth grade teachers know ahead of time. Students are very excited for the upcoming Talent Show on Thursday, February 15. Parents are cordially invited to attend, and we hope we will see you there! That same day is also Rosh Chodesh Adar, the month of joy and reversal of fortune, and in its honor we will hold our annual Pajama Day! Looking forward to our topsy-turvy Thursday!
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team

HEBREW with Ilana:

This week the fourth grade worked on stories in their workbook and learned new vocabulary. They practiced recognizing past tens verbs in a paragraph and writing sentences in past tens. Also they learned new song “Winter” (Choref). Attached is the link for the song.

Shabbat Shalom

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Yahadut, fourth graders returned to their Ancient Israel timeline to bridge the gap between our David and Saul unit and Purim. We covered a lot of history, through the Age of Kings, the schism between the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judea, the loss of the 10 Tribes, the destruction of the first Temple by the Babylonians, and the defeat of the Babylonians by Cyrus the Great. We are excited to begin learning Megillat Esther next week in preparation for Purim!
On Wednesday, we continued our Torah Trope until with the next four sets of trope symbols. A reminder that students must bring headphones or earbuds next Wednesday if they haven’t brought them already. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
In math, fourth graders have been enthusiastically plowing through our decimals unit. We learned tenths and hundredths and are exploring various ways of representing, writing, and manipulating them. More of that next week, too! We have been busy in reading class as we are juggling two projects at once. Each group has finished reading the nominees and we will be doing more with our analysis next week, both individually and a group. We also have begun our new reading groups on the Civil War. In social studies, we have finished our short study on US Government and are moving into the Civil War next week.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this week was the beginning of our new weekly Writing Workshop. This change in our weekly schedule was a result of a decision in last week’s class meeting. Writing Workshop is a time for 4th graders to work on an independent writing project. If they have passed the required keyboarding level, they have the choice for Buddy Writing. This is where fourth graders can pair up and work on a writing project with a classmate. Each working from their own computer, they collaborate on a shared Google Doc and create something together. (Don’t worry… it’s closely monitored by Miriam!)
