Chocolate Fun and Social Action Trip
Writing
In writing this week we let our imaginations soar! Second graders were given the choices of special stickers to use as main characters in their stories and were challenged to use the elements of a good story: a setting, characters, problem, and solution. Some of us created stories with a buddy, some of us worked independently, but it has been so fun being creative and deciding all the parts of our stories.
Math
In math we have been multiplying and dividing. We learned that multiplication numbers in a problem can be switched around (for example, 2×4 can also be written as 4×2 and it will not effect the answer), but division sentences cannot be switched around. We practiced multiplication and division problems in a hands-on way, like using blocks, cubes, and counters to represent the problem.
Over the break, practice some multiplication and division problems with your child!
Science and Reading
This week in science we continued our investigation of hidden colors. Second graders experimented with putting water and vinegar on different colored markers – green, purple, brown, orange – on coffee filter paper, and shared their colorful observations. For our last science class of 2017, we did another edible science project. After predicting how long it would take for solid chocolate to melt, we timed the melting of chocolate chips. With pretzels, marshmallows, and bananas we built imaginative creations, then drizzled our melted chocolate on top! We ate these treats during our viewing of Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, which we watched in honor of finishing out class read aloud .
Ask your child how the movie is different from the book!
Community Time: Saying Goodbye to Hazel
Students prepared goodbye letters and posters for Hazel who is moving back to Denmark with her family at the end of this month. It has been a true pleasure to have Hazel and her family be a part of our community this semester. We wish them the best of luck and talked about ways we can stay in touch.
Chanukkah
Second Graders led the school candle lighting this week. Thank you to the many parents who came to the Chanukkah play!
Social Action Trip to Cobble Hill
We visited the Cobble Hill Health Center for our second Social Action Trip. Students were put to the test, as there was an alternative program going on the room where we usually visit. I was proud to see that the students were able to be flexible and visit different rooms and people, and still bring some holiday joy to the residents and staff. We split into two groups. Both groups performed Kad Katan, and one group performed a rap from Hamilton, while Jacob B. played the cellow in the other group. Overall, it was a very nice trip. Thank you so much to parents Josh, Nina, Sarah, and Anna for attending!
