Celebrating Tu B’Shvat and Learning Measurement

Yahadut: Celebrating Tu B’Shvat

We celebrated the holiday of Tu B’shvat with the school. Our sixth grade buddies took us to the school fair. Jed from third grade visited our class to read a Tu B’shvat book written by his grandma.

Israel: Working together on Kibbutz

Yaheli and Yuval taught us about what a kibbutz is. They showed us images from google maps of the kibbutz that Hannah Senesh lived on, kibbutz Nahalal. They challenged us to group cooperation activities, as people have to live and work together on kibbutz. Lastly, students had a chance to use their dramatic skills to act out scenes from a kibbutz cafeteria or field.

Science

Our 2nd grade scientists have been hard at work the past two weeks.  They were excited to make another modeling mixture, salt dough.  Each student eagerly created a solid, a liquid, and a gas with their piece of dough,  and shared ideas with one another.
We conducted a number of experiments which made chemical reactions. One experiment created more immediate observable results; steel wool rinsed in vinegar started to rust within half an hour and kept getting rustier as the week progressed.  Steel wool soaked in water has been taking days to show rust.
Based on their interest in rust, we set up additional experiments with different kinds of metal in a variety of solutions.  Students  made predictions and are monitoring the changes on a daily basis.  Each science team also got a chance to create their own experiment recipes by combining a solid and liquid of their choice: baking soda, baking powder, steel wool, lime juice, and/or water. Although none “exploded” as some predicted (and wished for), there was plenty of overflowing bubbles!
An unexpected treat was to see what happens when sugar and a small amount of water are heated.  To the surprise of most (two kids had seen their grandmothers make this), the sugar underwent changes and in the end, caramelized. After it cooled, everyone enjoyed a sweet sample.

Math

This week was measuring mania! In math we have been studying units of measurement, specifically meters and centimeters. We learned how to write these words and how to use different rulers and line up the numbers correctly. We used words such as “taller than” and “shorter than” to describe length and learned the difference between length and width. We loved measuring different classroom objects, and discussed how using a meter stick would be better to measure larger objects or distances, and using a centimeter ruler would be better to measure smaller objects. Using clay we were challenged to make different shapes with specific measurements. Some of us were even more challenged to add all our measurements up together!

Over the weekend, have your child estimate in centimeters the length of different objects.

Art with Iviva:

In honor of Tu B’Shvat, we learned more about the seven associated plants. After drawing images of fig, date, olive and pomegranate trees, grape vines, barley and wheat, we traced our drawings onto foam plates to use for making prints. Some of us even added collage on top of select prints.
