Celebrating Hanukkah with our friends!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Happy Hanukah!! We had a fun and busy week in Kindergarten. Every day, we enjoyed lighting candles with our Fourth grade buddies! We have been practicing our song and dance for the Hanukkah Play! We even got to play in the snow!

In Math, we are learning numbers 0-20. We have been using ten frames to help us count. We are practicing counting to and writing numbers from 0-20. Please practice counting with your children at home!

In English Language Arts, we learned the letter Mm and the sound /m/ it makes (as in ‘moon’). We practiced forming upper and lowercase letters Mm using our Handwriting Without Tears books, wooden planks, and playdough. We were detectives looking for words that start with M and drawing pictures of them, and making our own monsters out of the letter M. We even had a Magic Show for letter M!

In Writing, we have been finishing up our How To Books…! Please look for them in the Blue Folders.

This week, for Hanukkah, we read many books by a wonderful Jewish Children’s author, Eric Kimmel. We laughed with “Hanukkah Bear,” were amazed by “The Magic Dreidels” and a little terrified by “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins.”

In Science, we continued our forces of motion unit. We learned about the words push and pull. We tried to find ways to push and pull objects around the room with a string and played a game where we acted out things that we push and pull in our everyday lives.

Hebrew and Jewish studies

This week was a very busy week as we celebrated Hanukkah in many ways. Throughout the week we sang and danced Hanukkah songs and prepared for our wonderful Hebrew play. The kids were engaged and so happy to share their talents. In addition, we worked on beautiful art projects such as Hanukiyot and sevivonim which will be sent home next week. We read the book “Geveret Kereh veMar Maaroch” by Datya Ben Dor and “It’s Chanuka Time”. We discussed the letter bet and words starting with the /B/ sound,for example: Balon- baloon, banana- banana, bayit- house, barvaz- duck.

Additional vocabulary: chanukiyah-Hanukkah menorah, sevivon-dreidel , nerot- candles, kad Shemen-pitcher of oil, Levivot-latkes, and sufganiyot-donuts, sun (shemesh) moon (yareach) and stars (kochavim), Adama- earth, deshe- grass, esev- grass, etzim-trees, prachim- flowers, perot- fruits, yerakot-vegetables, Tapuz- orange, oogah- cake, banana- banana, agas- pear, anavim- grapes
