Candles and Dreidels and Doughnuts, Oh My!

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It’s hard to believe that we’re wrapping up for winter vacation already! As we approach our time off, please remember to let teachers know if your child will be missing school either before or after school vacation time.
Also please remember to come to our Lower School Hebrew Play on Monday! Fourth graders are the stars of the show and have been working very hard on their parts. We hope to see you there!
Finally, Thursday is our class field trip to Fraunces Tavern. If you haven’t yet sent in the permission slip, please do so.
Happy Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team

HEBREW with Ilana:

We are very excited to see you on Monday, December 18, 2017 at the Lower School Hebrew Hanukkah Play and Candle Lighting! The children have been working very hard to prepare and you are all in for quite a treat! Here are a few very important reminders for Monday:

Costumes:  Your child needs to wear plain white shirt and black/dark pants or skirt (no logos or words on the shirts, please!)

Timing: All students must arrive in to the 4th grade class by 4:50. They must be fully dressed and ready to go.

Dismissal and After-School:  On Monday dismissal will be a regular. Bus, afterschool and pickup will be run as usual. Please do not leave your child unattended. They cannot stay at school without an adult and the security guards are not available to supervise the lobby. Please make arrangements as necessary.

Please  come on time as seating will be limited!

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Yahadut, Fourth graders dove deep into the true historical story of Chanukah, as well as into the Halachot and Minhagim (laws and traditions) that make this holiday unique. We learned about what various Rabbinic sources have to say about lighting the Menorah while blind, lighting during a dangerous time, and what to do if your Menorah causes unintentional damage. We also had the pleasure of getting to try out a real Olive Press with a special guest. Happy Chanukah!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
In math this week, we have been studying mode, median, range and mean (average). It has been great to hear the fourth graders using their new math vocabulary with confidence and ease! We also ended the week with our first lesson on probability. Social studies and writing class have been devoted to our research project on the American Revolution. Fourth graders are starting to wrap up their research and move into the drafting stage. To write their first drafts, fourth graders are speaking their words into the iPad which is typing it for them. Once everything is recorded, they will add, revise and edit on the computer. In reading, the groups are continuing to make progress on their award winning books and will be wrapping up next week.
SCIENCE with Sammi:
So what as the fourth grade been up to in science? Well for one, they have begun Typing Club! Typing Club is a program they began in third grade that teaches students how to type through lessons and games. The students all work at their own pace to improve their speed and accuracy. The fourth graders have been very excited to get back to typing even though it can be challenging at times. The students are welcome to continue practicing at home and I will send their log in cards home with them on Monday(many of them have memorized the website and their log ins). Besides typing, the fourth graders are deep into their Food Chemistry unit. The students have just finished learning about Glucose and are ready to move onto Fats. With each focus, students learn about the nutrient, learn how to test for the nutrient, test for the nutrient in a set of liquids, test for the nutrient in a set of foods, and review information about the affects of the nutrient on the body. The labs require a lot of steps and the fourth graders are really showing that they are true scientists as they follow lab procedures, take notes, and compare results.
