Back to school: fun and sun!
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had lots of fun this week in Kindergarten! The children were very excited to be back and had lots of stories to share with their classmates and teachers. They eagerly jumped into writing, reading, Hebrew, math and science.
In Math, we continued to learn about parts of a whole. We practiced using unifix cubes and 10 frames to find parts of numbers between 5 and 10. We wrote sentences such as “7 is 5 and 2” or “1 and 8 make 9.” We also practiced making patterns and telling time to the hour. Please practice telling time and counting coins at home!
In English Language Arts, we wrote about our vacations. We also learned about the -ot word family (cot, lot) and came up with sentences about words we chose from this word family.
In Writing, we continued our Persuasive Writing Unit. We began our final writing project by reading “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and discussing various ways to help our planet. The children are writing a book about how to help the world and protect animals, plants, people, water and air.
In Social Studies, we began our City Block Unit. We watched the video “Montrose Avenue” and used it to start a discussion about what a neighborhood is and what is in the neighborhood around Hannah Senesh.
In Science, we continued our unit Exploring Plants and Animals. We learned about the attributes of mammals. We watched a video and talked about what makes an animal a mammal (fur or hair, vertebrae, lungs, live babies, milk for babies, etc.). We played charades with different types of mammals and played games sorting lots of different kinds of animals into the following categories: “birds, fish, reptiles or mammals,” and habitats “water, snow, desert or grasslands.”
In Hebrew and Judaic – It was great to see the children again after the Passover break. The students were excited to share what they did over the Passover vacation using the phrase:. “Bepesach hayiti be…” ( On Pesach i was in/at). Some of the sentences children formed were “Bepesach hayiti beh Florida” or ““Bepesach hayiti beh Long Island.” We reviewed numbers and counted the Omer (Sfirat Haomer), or the counting of the 49 days between Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. Before counting we sing the song “Hineni muchan umzuman.” This week we read books such as Dvarim Sheani Yodeah Laasot Levad” by Emily Perel Kingsley and “Haow Ad Eser” by Ami Rubinger. We also reviewed vocabulary for objects that we have in the house. Finally, we continued our creation of the world and Shabbat artwork. Related vocabulary : aron-wardrobe, menorah- lamp, delet- door, chalon- window, sapa- sofa, televiziyah-television, vilon-curtain, shulchan- table, kiseh- chair, shatiach- carpet, mitah- bed, Carit- pillow, smicha- blanket.
Shabbat Shalom,
Regina, Rachel, Irit, and Ilana

Making patterns in Math
Art with Iviva:
We began learning about weaving, using cardboard looms. First, we learned the words warp, weft and loom. Next, we recited the pattern — under, over, under, over. Finally, we paired with a friend to put weft (horizontal) yarns through the warp (vertical) yarns.
