Almost Chanukah!

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
We are fast approaching Winter Vacation, which means that first we get to celebrate Chanukah together! Students have been working hard on the Lower School Hebrew Play, coming up Monday, December 18. We hope that we’ll see you there! We are also excited about the upcoming fourth grade trip to Fraunces’ Tavern in Manhattan, where George Washington once stayed and gave an address.
A reminder to parents that if your child will be missing school before or after vacation to please let us know.
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Yahadut, we learned the historical story of Chanukah, including its context of our long timeline of Ancient Israel. We talked about Alexander the Great’s conquest of Judea, and how his empire’s divide following his death paved the way for Judea to be seen as an area of great strategic value. We learned the story of the Book of Maccabees, and talked about the many things this holiday has come to stand for: a memorial for Jewish strength, victory, and endurance, a religious holiday, and a festival of light. Be sure to ask your child about the real story of Chanukah! Next week, we focus on the laws and traditions of the holiday. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
Fourth graders have been working incredibly hard in each of their general studies classes this week. The primary focus of their studies right now is the American Revolution independent research topics. Each child got their own topic and are pouring over their sources to gather as much information as they can. This is a combined social studies and writing project, which is stretching their nonfiction skills many times over. Each reading group is continuing to make progress on each of their books and met for the second time on Wednesday. In math, we have wrapped up our study of tables and graphs and are moving onto averages, mean and mode next week. Be sure to check out their math/art projects on display in the hallway!
