HUMANITIES

In History class this week, students focused on preparing for and taking the ancient Greece test. While studying together, we reviewed forms of government, geographical features, historical landmarks, and cultural practices. The students revealed how much they now know about ancient Greece, and, perhaps more importantly, they were able to point out several ways that ancient Greek history continues to influence our lives today.

In Writing, students worked hard on their speeches for the Greek Symposium. They’ll be speaking about their ancient Greece research topics and their original artwork. All of their speeches are creative and engaging, and they’re looking forward to sharing their accomplishments at the June 12th event.

Lastly, in Literature class, we finished reading The Graveyard Book and are now beginning some culminating activities related to the story. For example, we shared some of our favorite quotes from the last chapter, most of which related to the process of growing up, learning life lessons, and becoming independent. We also watched a video of the author Neil Gaiman speaking about his writing process, which sparked discussions about how an author’s identity influences his or her writing.

I hope you have a nice weekend!

JUDAICS:

This week we watched part of Exodus: Kings and Gods, a 2014 movie version of our Shemot text. It was amazing to hear all the comments from students about how far off the production was from the text. They cited specific text that was different from the movie’s portrayal. We will be writing a review together about the movie after we watch a bit more. Students also created final Kushiyot (text-based question) projects. They got together with their peers who had similar questions and cited the text and came up with their opinions on the text. They also explored commentary on their questions. Students will present next week and show the class the value of their kushiyah and how exploring it can deepen our understanding of the text. Shabbat Shalom. Laura

SCIENCE

Students this week in science finished their unit on evolution and adaptation by exploring the fact of symbiosis. Students collected pictures that demonstrate the three types of symbiosis found in nature. These pictures uniquely captured the concept of mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Next week we will be conducting activities and experiments suggested by the students. This will allow us to end this year of science with fun activities that interest our students.
