HUMANITIES

This week in History students focused on ancient Greek wars and battles, learning about the Persian Wars and Peloponnesian War. We examined the “phalanx,” an ancient Greek battle formation, and made inferences about its effectiveness. We also talked about the “big ideas” and themes that came out of these wars, such as the notion that small groups can come together to accomplish large, seemingly impossible goals. Lastly, we listened to a fun, musical video that narrates the Peloponnesian War through art. See the video at this link if you’re interested!

In Literature class, students are nearing the end of The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. This week, we reviewed the history of infamous spooky creatures featured in the book, including ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and witches. Students had fun writing their own stories around these spooky creatures, staying true to their traditional characteristics.

In Writing class, students are preparing for the Greek Symposium on June 12th. They are working hard on their speeches and art projects, which they will share with parents at the event.

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend!

SCIENCE

Students have been exploring evolution and animal adaptation using interactive software and educational activities. With this final unit we are bringing together our understanding of life and how it is always changing throughout the course of time. We are excited to finish these last few weeks with more interactive and enjoyable science experiences.

HEBREW

This week the students have taken the standardized AVANT test.  This will enable us to analyze their progress this year and areas in which students need support next year. The test is for curriculum planning purposes only. It is a learning tool for us. It does not count towards the students’ grades or groupings.

Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend,

Andreea

JUDAICS:

“This week we took a vocab challenge and some took a retest. We worked on an independent packet for Shemot ch 5&6. I liked reading on my own and answering questions because it helped me look more into the text and think at my own pace about my ideas on what I was reading. Right now in Shemot I find it interesting that God is asking Moshe to bring Bnai Yisrael in tribes and not as a whole. This first of all shows that they know which tribe they are a part of.  I also think God is doing this because God wants them to be safe and organized. Maybe if they leave in tribes like little by little they will be able to escape”.-  Saul
