HUMANITIES

Firstly, the students should be so proud of themselves for working through the ERBs this week! It’s not easy to sit through two mornings of tests, and regardless of score, enduring those testing hours is an accomplishment in itself.

In Writing this week, students began working on their speeches for the ancient Greek Symposium on June 12th. Students will be speaking about their ancient Greece research topics and the artifacts they’re creating. They look forward to sharing their artwork and research with you!

In Literature, we continued reading The Graveyard Book, examining the main character’s relationship to home and his childhood mentors. Students noticed that even though Bod’s life is so different from a normal child’s (seeing as he is raised in a graveyard among ghosts . . . ), he, too, comes of age and matures as he grows into his teenage years.

Lastly, students studied the ancient Greek city of Sparta this week in History, comparing Sparta’s culture and values to our own. We learned that Sparta had multiple dimensions: though the city-state was violent, war-obsessed, and seemingly harsh overall, it also treated its female residents relatively well compared to other city-states of the time. While women in Athens were deprived of an education and spent the majority of their lives at home, women in Sparta were able to read, write, participate in athletics, and more.

Have wonderful weekend and holiday,

Naomi

JUDAICS

This week in Judaics we prepared for the holiday of Shavuot by studying the text from Shemot when Moshe goes up to Mt Sinai for the Ten Commandments. We experienced the horns blast and the thunder and lightening as we read and discussed this moment in our nations history. We talked about how the experience brought in all of the senses. We reflected on why G-d chose to create this scene for the giving of the Torah. Students had beautiful explanations during our discussion like; “making it more memorable therefore easier to pass down details about it to the next generation” and “being the “right amount” of scared, showing awe for the power of G-d and even being comforted by the scariest thing being on their side”. Students also learned a variety of Rabbinic texts connecting to this moment. They learned their texts and presented pictures, poems and plays for each other. I wish everyone a Chag Shavuot Sameach!!  –Laura

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week, due to the ERB’s we missed a few classes. During the classes we had HaKbatza Aleph continued to work enthusiastically on their show. It would be great if you could encourage your children to spend at least fifteen minutes a day studying their parts and songs by heart.

HaKbatza Bet reviewed the conjugation of possession prepositions in sentences in the past tense. In addition, we continued to read, write and discuss about children’s rooms, some organized and some messy.

I wish everyone Shavuot Sameach!
