6th Grade News: 4/23 – 4/27/18

HUMANITIES

This week in Literature class we began our new novel, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The book tells a semi-supernatural tale about a human boy who grows up in a graveyard and is raised by ghosts who died hundreds of years ago. It’s both a fun and sophisticated read, filled with spooky elements like werewolves and full moons, as well as frequent references to history, gothic literature, and mythology. As we read, we’ll analyze literary devices like “perspective” and “allusion,” and discuss abstract questions such as How do our homes shape who we are? and What kinds of legacies should we aim to leave behind?

In History class, we continued our study of ancient Greece by examining the Trojan War and the ancient Greek Olympics. Students became critical historians as they tried to determine which parts of the Trojan War might have truly happened, and which parts are likely legend. While studying the Olympics, we browsed powerful photos from modern-day Olympic games, imagining how Greek athletes might have felt thousands of years ago.

Finally, we continued our ERB study by practicing vocabulary questions and sharing useful strategies. We’ll continue our study of the ELA-related sections next week. As a reminder, the ERBs will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 15th and 16th.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend,

Naomi

ADVISORY

6th graders had an outstanding time on Tuesday visiting the Youth Farm, an urban farm that supports community and education initiatives. The students helped out with the farm’s large composting project– turning and sifting through compost piles and breaking down branches. We were lucky to visit on a beautiful day, and we enjoyed the sun while we worked. See some photos and a video of the field trip below!

JUDAICS

It was so nice to come home and catch up with the 6th grade this week! They told me all about the amazing discussions they had surrounding Yom Hashoa and their Israel unit. We continued working on the finishing touches of our “Sneh” (Burning bush) art and began looking at Moshe’s leadership styles. Looking forward to Lag B’omer next week!

Shabbat shalom,

Laura
