HUMANITIES

This week in History class, we focused on the ancient Greek agora, or outdoor marketplaces. The agoras of ancient Greece were a sort of combination of today’s farmer’s markets, universities, and downtown areas. Students imagined and acted out what it might have been like for politicians, scientists, shoppers, and philosophers to come together in one central area in order to conduct business and discuss ideas.

In Writing class, students finished their outlines for their ancient Greece research essay. Next, they’ll be putting all their ideas together more formally as they work on their first drafts. I’ve enjoyed seeing how quickly they’ve become experts in each of their topics — from ancient Greek art, to architecture, to the Trojan War.

In Literature, students recorded their own podcasts related to our theme Coming of Age. Some of the podcasts share turning points they’ve experienced in their own lives during their “tween” years, while others focus on characters in the coming of age novels we read. The students used the app Garageband to incorporate background music, a variety of voices, and even some special effects. Next week, students will share their final recordings and give each other feedback.

Lastly, we began our ERB preparation this week, focusing first on reading comprehension strategies. Students practiced implementing techniques like process of elimination, searching for key words, and answering the easier questions first. Our discussions and practice throughout these next few weeks will help alleviate students’ anxiety around  ERB test-taking, allowing them to perform to their full potential.

“This week in Judaic studies we learned about Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. On Yom Ha’atzmaut we each were assigned a group to lead tefillah  and we all created a “Kotel” for each group. The whole day was filled with fun activities and even some dancing. We spent most of our day learning about different parts of Israel and the people there. However on Yom Hazikaron the day wasn’t as exciting. When I heard the siren everyone was silent, and I felt a moment of peace and helplessness. Afterwards I felt confused because people just went back to exactly what they were doing like nothing happened. I guess this taught me that there are times when we can allow ourselves to grieve but we can’t let this stop us, we have to keep on moving. Over all in this week I feel that I have learned so much about Israel and all the and amazing and depressing events that happened there and will happen.

השבוע התלמידים המשיכו בהכנות לקראת טקס יום העצמאות, שהיה מרגש מאד. במקביל, התלמידים המשיכו לעבוד על הסיפורים האישיים שלהם. השינשינית יובל ערכה פעילות מיוחדת לכבוד יום העצמאות והתלמידים נהנו מאד.

SCIENCE 

Students this week continued with the building process of their informational disease games. Their games are coming together nicely from their designs. This is allowing the students to enhance their design and improve on their games. Next week we will continue finishing the building process of these unique and thoughtful informational disease games.
