6th Grade News: 3/19 – 3/23/18

MATH

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoyed the snow day this week! The sixth grade is working hard right before the break. In 6Y, they are starting a new unit in circles. We are learning about circumference and about the area of a circle. They are figuring out how to use the formula and they finally get the chance to play with a calculator, which they are very excited about. They will continue working on circles through the break. In 6X, they just started a new unit on speed and rate. They will be looking at how fast things move and what the unit rate is used for. We will even get a chance to do some dreaded train problems. Should be a fun last week before the break. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

HUMANITIES

This week in History class, we celebrated the end of our ancient Egypt unit with games, an Egyptian afterlife simulation, and a class party. For our simulation, students designed creative quizzes and challenges to test their classmates’ knowledge of various topics we’ve studied –including Pyramids, Pharaohs, Mummies, and Egyptian Geography. They each traveled from challenge to challenge, trying to prove their “worthiness,” just as an Egyptian soul was believed to do when a person died. Afterward, the students weighed their “hearts” (a bag of marbles) against a feather in order to see if they would be granted entry to the glorious and relaxing afterlife. Students had a great time trying all of their classmates’ quizzes and games, which included a bean bag toss, a maze, a giant puzzle, and even physical exercises. See the photos of the students participating in the challenges below. You may also read more about this journey to the Egyptian afterlife here.

Now that we are moving on to our ancient Greece unit, we have begun the first steps of a research project related to ancient Greece in Writing class. Students chose topics that interested them, learned about how to take notes on their research, and began digging into some relevant books and websites today. Students are studying everything from fashion to philosophy to the Peloponnesian War;  I’m looking forward to hearing about all that they’re learning throughout the research process. They’ll present their research to parents and guests at the “6th Grade Greek Symposium” on June 12th.

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week HaKbatza Aleph learned how to give advice and how to formulate rules and interdictions. In addition, the students also read texts about the issues that pet owners face.

HaKbatza Bet has been learning how to describe their homes using nouns and adjectives. The students have been acting out conversations.

I wish you all a nice weekend,

Andreea

JUDAICS:

The student teacher taught us about a Passover Mishnah. We started working on our Passover project. Everyone will make something they can share at their Seder. I think that it is interesting to learn about the story of our ancestors.”- Zephyr
