6th Grade News: 2/5 – 2/9/18

Special announcement:

During the month of Adar, the month of Purim, it is a tradition to do things that make us happy. To get ourselves into the Purim spirit, all teachers, staff, and students should come to school in pajamas on Thursday, February 15th (Rosh Chodesh Adar – or the first day of the month of Adar)!  Please note, that the date on the physical school calendar says Friday, February 16th, but there has been a change of date.  Students must wear shoes or slippers. If your child has PE on Thursdays, please remember to send him/her with a pair of sneakers.

SCIENCE

This week, students continued exploring the nervous system. They conducted rotation activities in order to discover the properties of smell and taste. They investigated how the nose can detect different smells and tried to identify ten unknown samples. Next week we will start our immune system unit and STEAM project.

JUDAICS

This week we continued in Chumash. Students began translating the moment where Moshe first encounters the burning bush. We discussed the skills Moshe gained while being a shepherd and how this could help him become a good leader. Students thought about what skills they are gaining in life now that can help them with their life goals. We looked at the Midrash on our text and figured out what questions the Rabbis were answering with the stories. Moving forward in our text we will be studying the idea of Holy Space and if Moshe is a good leader and or hero.

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week HaKbatza Aleph was hard at work reviewing the past tense. We reviewed the various groups of conjugations of the Paal, Piel and Hitpael structures in the past tense. Next week, the students will have a quiz on the past tense and will use the rest of the week composing an oral piece in the past tense.

This week HaKbatza Bet continued to practice the correct use of adjectives. In addition, we continued to practice using new verbs in the present tense and in the infinitive. We practiced speaking about specific objects and we ended the week creating a Kahoot game for the new vocabulary words. You can have a peek at the students hard at work. 🙂

I wish you all a relaxing weekend,

Andreea

HUMANITIES

This week in History class, students learned all about the traditions and rituals surrounding Egyptian mummification. Preserving a body in this way was a complex, sacred task that required painstaking attention to detail and took several months to complete. We examined the many items involved in mummification, including special amulets for good luck as well as a long hook used for smashing the brain and pulling it out through the nose (really! The kids enjoyed that one . . . ). Now, our class is beginning to discuss the fascinating stage that was believed to follow death and mummification: the Egyptian afterlife.

In Writing class, students practiced integrating quotes smoothly into their research essays and learned how to incorporate in-text citations. They are just beginning the first drafts of their argument essays, which are due next Friday.

In Literature, we are approaching the end of Roll of Thunder. The book has given us many opportunities to learn about 19th century American history, and this week we focused on the Great Depression. In small groups, students analyzed a range of photos from the Great Depression era, drawing inferences about the particular hardships people experienced during that time.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Naomi

ADVISORY

This week in advisory, 6th graders launched a social action project related to our theme for this year: caring for the environment. 6th graders will act as leaders in the middle school, educating others about recycling and encouraging everyone to reduce our waste each day. As part of these efforts, students are filming educational videos, decorating the hallway, and researching waste reduction strategies around the world and in NYC. Mike and I are enjoying watching the students work collaboratively and creatively to improve our school.

Best,

Naomi & Mike
