HUMANITIES

This week in History, we had a great time learning about the afterlife of ancient Egypt. After studying the magical and perilous journey that the “ba,” or soul, takes to the afterlife, we collaborated to create “travel guides” for travelers on this journey. On each page, students included descriptions of the various challenges that the ba could expect to face, as well as advice related to how to defeat these challenges. Take a look at our travel guides below!

In Literature, students finished reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. They participated in enthusiastic debates along the way, discussing how victims of prejudice can or should fight to maintain their rights. The events of the book urged students to consider: How can we maintain dignity when we are not being treated with respect? How can we stand up for our rights in peaceful and safe ways? We came to the tough conclusion that often, the answers to these questions are far from clear or easy.

Finally, in Writing class, students completed the first drafts of their argument essays. They included quotes from articles, videos, and interviews, and they learned how to cite their sources using in-text citations. I’m looking forward to reading their comprehensive arguments about issues around immigration, animal rights, cyberbullying, and more. We will work on our final drafts when we return from February break.

Have a wonderful vacation if you are taking one,

Naomi

JUDAICS

“This week we worked on our Purim unit about if women can read megillah or not according to the Mishnah, Talmud, and many more modern texts. We learned each text and saw how opinions changed and how single words changed the outcome. We are writing our own Rabbinic text with our opinions on the issue and adding it to this timeline of Rabbinic ruling. On Friday we watched ‘Patterns of Evidence’ a documentary about Egyptian history and the Exodus. We watched in Naomi’s class and Laura’s class because we are learning about Egypt in both.

Have a good day! PS Hi Mom and Dad!”  –-Saul

SCIENCE

This week, students started their STEAM project around the immune system and germs. Students played two human interactive games, immunity pac-man and immunity chess. They also collected samples around the school and are growing bacteria in petri dishes. Using the “Seesaw” software, they are digitally documenting the growth of these samples. We cannot wait to continue this unit after our break and see the growth of our bacteria.

HEBREW HERITAGE

הורים יקרים,

השבוע שוחחנו על ספורטאים ישראליים ואולימפיאדת החורף. התלמידים ערכו חיפוש באינטרנט אודות הספורטאים הישראלים שזכו באוליפיאדות השונות במטרה להכיר אותם והרקע שלהם. כשנחזור מהחופשה התלמידים יעברו לעבוד על פרוייקט אישי הקשור לספורטאים הישראליים.

אני מאחלת לכם חופשה מהנה.

Dear parents,

This week HaKbatza Aleph finished the unit on the past tense. the students practiced using various verbs in order to tell stories and interview each other about events that happened in the past.

HaKbatza Bet practiced verbs in the present tense, learned new adjectives, and discussed what aspects we encounter in our daily lives.

To end the week on a happy note, the students learned a song about Friday and recorded their own version of it.

I wish everyone a relaxing vacation,

Andreea
