6th Grade News: 1/8 – 1/12/18

HUMANITIES:

This week in Literature, students created and shared collaborative projects related to the novels they read about ancient Egypt: Pharaoh’s Daughter and The Golden Goblet. Through original songs, posters, and digital presentations, students displayed their understanding of the literary terms “Plot Pyramid” and “Mood.” It was a pleasure to see their creativity on display today as they presented their work. In History class, students explored an incredible artifact from ancient Egypt: King Khufu’s funeral boat. The boat, which was buried at the base of the Pyramid of Giza, was discovered in 1954 and was painstakingly reassembled and reconstructed by a team of archaeologists. Students browsed images of the 150-foot long boat and its parts, and made inferences about ancient Egyptian architecture, beliefs, and funeral rituals based on their exploration. Feel free to learn more about this archaeological discovery at this website. In Writing we focused on vocabulary practice, learning to write strong and complex sentences using our new words. We will be beginning an analytical/research essay in the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful long weekend,

Naomi

JUDAICS:

“This week, the sixth graders began learning about the partition of historical land, now known as Israel, between Jews and Arabs during WW1.  Topics such as the Balfour Declaration, the Dreyfus Affair etc. were thoroughly discussed and reviewed. Laura, our teacher, set up a skit for us explaining more about the feelings thrown between the Palestinians and Jewish people. She put a lollipop on a student’s desk and told her not to touch it. Later, she wrote two letters to two students saying: “The lollipop is yours.” Those two students began to fight over the lollipop and then Laura took the lollipop for herself. This skit demonstrated how the British promised the same land to both the Palestinians and the Jewish people, but instead of them getting mad at the British, they got mad at each other. I am looking forward to learning about specific people that experienced the War of Independence and what they thought.”

Shabbat Shalom,

HEBREW:

Dear parents,

This week, HaKbatza Aleph has continued practicing using nouns and adjectives related to clothing. We also started reviewing the past tense, comparing the clothing we wear today vs. the clothing we wore in the past.

HaKbatza bet continued to practice using verbs in the present tense vs. helping verbs + verbs in the infinitive.

In addition, the students practiced for the MLK Tekes singing the Hebrew version of We Shall Overcome. I am attaching a few pictures from the rehearsal.

SCIENCE:

Students this week continued their discovery of their first human body system. Using string, they measured out the length of the large organs in the digestive system. Students found it surprising how long their digestive system is, with the string covering the distance of the science classroom. Next students looked closer at the stomach; using plastic bags they discovered how food looks when it gets digested. Next week we will continue our unit on the human body systems.
