SCIENCE

This week in Science, students used simulation software to breed mice. This allowed them to continue their studies of genetics by discovering the fur color of mice offspring. Students worked hard and asked questions in order to master the concepts of genetics.

JUDAICS

Saul: “This week in Judaics we finished our Shemot unit on Shifra and Puah, the Midwives who did not kill the baby boys like Pharaoh told them to . We started our Hero projects on the female heroines seen in this section.  We chose from Shifra and Puah, Miriam and Yocheved. We then got put into groups to get started on our project that will be displayed with our Humanities Hero projects. Today in Judaics we finished a first draft of our Hero projects and next week we will start working on our final draft.

P.S. Hi mom and dad!”

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week  HaKbatza Aleph wrote and learned by heart short skits with the vocabulary we learned. On Friday, the students presented the skits to their classmates.

HaKbatza Bet finished the unit on schools in Israel. They practiced listening comprehension and conversation by listening to Israeli children describe their schools and by comparing their schools with Hannah Senesh.

Shabbat Shalom,

Andreea

HUMANITIES

In Literature class this week, students continued reading their historical fiction books about Egypt– The Golden Goblet or Pharaoh’s Daughter. We used Padlet, an online bulletin board, to share discussion questions and answers about each book with the whole class. See their online conversations here: 6A conversation & 6B conversation. We also studied the literary concept of Plot Pyramid. A story about our class character “Otto the Octopus” revealed how most fictional narratives incorporate the five stages of plot: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. Students then considered how these plot elements shape popular fairy tales like Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

In Writing class, students finished up their original Giver endings and had the chance to read several of their classmates’ final drafts. It was a pleasure to see students’ creative minds at work as they each imagined a unique and surprising ending to the novel.

Lastly, in History, our Mesopotamia unit culminated with a test this past Wednesday and a “Mesopotamia party” on Thursday. We played Mesopotamia-related party games and shared sweet treats to celebrate all that we’ve learned.

ADVISORY

This week in advisory, students played a team-building game. They were divided into groups, and each team was tasked with choosing ten items to take with them to a remote mountain after a hypothetical plane crash. Afterward, we debriefed the team-working experience: How did it feel to make decisions as a group? Which strategies did you try in order to reach compromises? What are the benefits of working as a team to problem-solve, instead of working individually?

During our second advisory period, we continued with our mindfulness curriculum. This week, we focused on being mindful of our breath. We took control of our breathing by blowing on pieces of tissue paper and observing the impact.

Here are some photos from both of the above activities:
