6th Grade News: 1/22 – 1/26/18

ADVISORY

In Advisory this week, the 6th graders had a lot of fun participating in a “seed workshop” led by representatives from Repair the World. After learning about the planting and harvesting process, students were able to plant their own seeds and bring them home. We also had an informative and valuable discussion about “food deserts” in Brooklyn, or areas where people struggle to access fresh fruits and vegetables. It was great to see students drawing the connection between this fun, hands-on activity and social justice issues. Here are a few photos from the workshop:

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This has been a super exciting week for students in the 6th grade.

HaKbatza Aleph concluded the unit on clothing and adjectives by staging an amazing fashion show! I am still editing the movie but will share a link with you shortly.

HaKbatza Bet Started a unit on Jerusalem, focusing on using adjectives in all four forms. The students took a test on the previous unit and were very successful.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend,

Andreea

JUDAICS:

In JS this week we have been working on projects about why Moshe ran away from Egypt. We have been looking deeply into why Torah uses certain words and what the Rabbis think of it. In the projects we are either doing an interview, a puppet show, a song or a comic. We have certain requirements to make sure we fulfill that help check if we fully understand the text. Our class will be presenting on Tuesday! I hope you have an awesome weekend. Nomi

This week we translated from Shemot chapter 2 for a new project! For the project we could choose a puppet show, interview, or song. My group chose a puppet show. We gathered old socks and materials. We wrote a script. In the script we included all of the verbs seen in the text, commentary from Rashi, Quotes, a kushiyah (text based question) and a moral lesson seen in the story. We will be presenting them on Tuesday. I am very excited  present this because I love puppets!- Ali

MATH

This week in math class the 6Y class worked diligently on their percentage project. They were able to use Google Sheets as well as Docs and create a story on how to budget their money for a month. They figured out how much they had to spend with taxes, tip, and interest when putting money into the bank. They thoroughly enjoyed doing the project. In 6X, they are in the middle of learning about percents and interest, as well as tax and tip. By the end of next week they will know how to pay a bill when going out to eat, so do not forget to ask them to help you. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

SCIENCE

This week, students continued their exploration of the circulatory system. We conducted a hands-on activity in order to learn about blood types. Students were given four different synthetic blood samples and used realistic blood typing techniques in order to discover if their samples were A, B, AB, O, A-, B-, AB-, or O- blood types. We continue to have an enjoyable time learning about these body systems. Next week we will explore the nervous system.

HUMANITIES

This week in History class was all about pyramids. Students learned some incredible facts about the famed and majestic Pyramid of Giza: it weighs around 6.5 million tons, for example, and around 10 football fields could fit inside its square base. Watch this video to learn more! Students also learned about the process of building the Pyramid of Giza at this website, and then wrote diary entries from the perspective of an ancient Egyptian architect or builder contributing to the project. Ask your children to read their diary entries to hear their creative stories about pyramid-building in ancient Egypt.

In Literature class, students continued reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and learned about the historical context of the story. We discussed the state of race relations in the South during the Jim Crow era and found connections to history in our novel. I was impressed with the students’ mature perspectives on prejudiced attitudes throughout history and today.

Lastly, in Writing class, 6th graders chose their own topics for our approaching argument essay and spent the week researching and taking notes. They are focusing on issues related to social justice and/or the government, such as immigrants’ rights, the moral implications of zoos, and the consequences of cyber-bullying. Now that they’ve read articles and gathered information, we’ll start forming our precise arguments and outlining our essays next week.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Naomi
