6th Grade News: 12/18 – 12/21/17

HUMANITIES

This week, 6th graders had a great time sharing their hard work from this semester at our Heroes Convention. Thank you to everyone who could make it; we enjoyed sharing our videos, posters, and essays with you. See some photos and a slideshow of the event below.

In History class this week, students continued learning about ancient Egypt. In particular, we examined the significance of Nile river and its impact on daily life. We also engaged in a discussion about current events, focusing on President Trump’s recent decision to downsize two national monuments in Utah. I was impressed with the students’ ability to participate in an intellectual debate about the topic and comprehend opinions on all sides of the issue.

Have a nice vacation with your families,

Naomi

JUDAICS

“This week in Judaics we finished our heroine projects. My favorite part of this project was finding a symbol that represents our heroine. I really enjoyed learning more about the text and figuring out a symbol with my chevruta. I also think it was really fun and helped us learn more when we asked Kushiyot to each other. It showed us that we can think deeply and add on to what we already think. We also finished our Hanukkah unit by finishing the Gemara about where to place your Hanukkiah. We made art pieces to show what each part of the Gemara meant about where to place your Menorah. We saw that the purpose was to publicize the miracle of Hanukkah, while still making sure you are safe. It was really interesting to see what everyone else thought of the Gemara.

Have a great New Year break!”

Aviyah

“This week in Judaics we finished our heroine projects to present at the Hero exhibition. The project consisted of two parts. One part was a paper recording of our chevruta conversation about who the heroine was and what she meant to us and our Kushiyah on the text surrounding her part in the story. We also did an art piece. They will be taken home after break. If you would like a closer look at them you can ask your child to show you their work on google classroom. Here are some questions you can ask your child, ‘Who is your hero?’ ‘Why did you choose her?’ ‘What is heroic about what she did?’

Shabbat Shalom!”

HEBREW

This week HaKbatza Aleph started a new unit about clothing and its role in people’s lives. The students discussed the importance of designer labels.

HaKbatza Bet continued to read and discuss life in the desert in Israel, and which ways it is similar or different to life in Brooklyn.

I wish everyone a wonderful vacation,

Andreea
